post IV questions

I finished up my first ever round of IVs about 10 days ago. Right after, I felt great. I hardly coughed at all and when I did my vest and HTS hardly anything was coming up. I hadn't realized just how full of gunk I had actually been until it was gone! I could laugh without coughing, which I haven;t done in seriously, like 12 years - maybe more.

Anyway, it seems now everything is creeping back in. I mean, I just vested and I had a huge amount of crap coming up. It scares me! I do not want to do IVs again anytime soon. Is this normal? All the junk was really easy to get up and felt like it was coming from down deep - whereas before it seemed that everything was always coming off the top, if that makes sense.

Have I finally cleared out enough junk that I am able to get down into the lower lobes now when I do my treatments or are my bugs just regrowing that quickly? The stuff I am getting up is yellow-greenish, and chunky. gross, sorry.

So how goes it? and what more can I be doing to keep things from getting bad again?? The thought of IVs again anytime soon really makes me really want to run and hide.

you are colonized with PA, right? it takes about 10-14 days where PA levels return back to normal after IV's.

you very well may be getting up junk from down deep. do you feel tired/warn out? that would be the indicator i would use if you are sick again with an active infection vs. just getting more junk up in your lungs.

i would look into taking NAC if I were you - if you want to find more things to do to keep things from getting bad. it's not fool proof, but it's a really effective treatment for inflammation with CF. I would also look into taking azithromycin 500mg 3 times a week.

oh yes, and increase your vest & HTS to 3-4 times a day if you can. that will help you get all this crap up more easily

hey shannon,

yeah, having dark colored/chunky stuff come up that soon after ivs is definitely not ideal. i'm not sure why, but i know two things you can do that would help for sure -- more therapy/HS and exercise. now's the time to get off your toosh and reclaim the goodness that came from the ivs!

for me, the quantity of stuff i cough up varies somewhat from day to day. but when a greater portion of the stuff is darker/thicker than usual for a few days, i know it's time for ivs. i don't think it matters where the stuff is coming from that you cough out.

good luck, girl!

For me it takes a long time to get all the dark stuff that has been stuck out.

For example....I have been on ivs & in the hospital for almost 3 weeks. Just last week the therapist said that my sputum is looking a lot lighter.

THEN BAM something moves & I am coughing up dark stuff again. This also happens once I am off iv's. Its like working through the layers of gook.

Now that you are down to the deeper layer, work hard to get that stuff out. Unless you are running fevers or something else has drastically changed I would say things are moving through the normal process.
