Does anyone use a probiotic regularly? I have the Flu...for the very first time and am reading about how probiotics can help.

I take Accuflora 2x daily. I get a gigantic bottle from Amazon for less than $30 I think. But when I'm on antibiotics -- oral or iv-- I take the Lactobacilis (sp) from the pharmacy that is kept refrigerated.

My daughter takes Lactobacilis (sp) that is kept in the frig at the pharmacy once a day when not on antibiotics and 2 times a day during and for 2 weeks after antibiotics. Her last antibiotic had a high likelihood of causing C-diff I was told and she made it through fine. Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Last spring even though she had gotten the flu vaccine she still got the flu and was hospitalized because of it. In the hospital they started the 2 times daily Lactobacilis (Sp) and told us to keep her on 1 dose a day from then on and up to the twice daily during anitbiotics and 2 weeks after.

Best wishes for a quick recovery.

I take Ortho Biotics:

http://www.amazon.com/Ortho-Molecular-Product-Orthos-Capsules/dp/B000JLK7M6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323872362&sr=8-1

I like them because they don't have to be refrigerated and I only need one per day. They were recommended to me by the people at the "wellness pharmacy" - which means they offer traditional and alternative medicine (and they are awesome <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">. If I take one of those and eat a yogurt each day, it really help keeps thrush/yeast and stomach issues at bay.

I had never heard that probiotics can help with the flu (i'm assuming you don't mean stomach flu). That is really interesting - I may up my probiotic next time I catch it!

Yep! My son takes Culterelle, sustenex, and florastor. Kinda found out how helpful they were to cf by accident. My son's stool turned completely normal after getting it right. There was actually a study done on the one that is in culterelle and CF. It was shown to result in less inflammation both in th egut and the lungs. I would be shocked if it is not a standard of care for cf in the near future!

I give our 6 year old Culturelle every day. I started that when his CF doc prescribed Augmentin despite the fact that we all knew it gave him horrible vomiting and diarrhea continuously. I talked to his regular ped about my fear and they suggested Culturelle. He got thru the antibiotics without any problem. Since then I have discovered that Culturelle has become a regular recommendation on the CF Floor at our Center during "tune ups.". Then I discovered several threads that indicated better control of recurring Upper respiratory infections in patients who have a lot of reflux issues, so I've kept him on it. That may be what leads some to say it helps with "the flu" since most of the time we are dealing with upper respiratory problems. He has definitely been better, with less exacerbations. There are no side effects that I've seen. So . . . There only appear to be plusses to taking it, no negatives. Good Luck!

We give our 12 year old Culturelle x 2 a day. Before breakfast and with dinner. Like Gammaw, we have had difficultly with digestion when he is on an antibiotic. Working with the CF team, a dietician, and his regular Ped, we stumbled upon this and it has done wonders.

We have had no negative side effects, and since his stomach does not get upset he is in a better mood most of the time. Best of luck on this.

I use a probiotic as well for my dd. To tell the truth I did not see any spectacular results from it even though I use a refrigirated version that is relatively expensive. She still catches all the viruses etc. During antibiotics courses she never had any diarrhea even without probiotic and she still complains of stomach pain even when on it. I still keep giving it to her since it makes sense, maybe it prevented C diff or something.

I take a mega probiotic with 15 billion little critters of many varieties as well as soil based organisms. I think it makes a difference in how I feel. My intestines seem to work better on them.
