Pulmonary Rehab

For those that can not handle exercise that contains too much strain, like me, there is pulmonary rehab. It is by prescription only and is a 6 week program, but you are able to stay on maintenence after for a low price. Mine is at a local hospital and it is like a gym, but for people with pulmonary problems which makes it a little easier than being at a regular gym where people are way outdoing you. I go there on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays to walk the tredmill, lift weights, cardio glide and this other thing i can't remeber the name of. LOL!! You sit and step while pulling on these arm things like they have on an exercise bike. They also have a stair master and exercise bikes, but i am unable to do those because my lungs do not allow it. So i go there with other pulmonary patients that are all old with emphazema, but it makes it easier to have the suport while working out. It has done me a great deal of good. I actually went for 2 years then stopped going, but my doctor wrote me a new script last week and wants me to start back. So this is another great way to get in your exercise & fitness.~JeRi

Is the hospital you go to Pulmonary Rehab in a larger city? Is it paid by any insurance or do you pay out of pocket? My doctor wants me to get into this, but I never thought about contacting our local hospital. I was thinking doctors offices for some reason. I live in the country so resources are real limited. I will check with our local hospital tho. I use to work there & have had PFT done there so I might luck out!

Hey Melissa, I couldn't live in a more "out in the middle of nowhere" town. LOL!! The hospital i go to is very small and i wouldn't take my dog there for treatment, but the rehab program is good. HEHE!! The insurance does pay for the 6 week program and i don't know how others are, but after the 6 weeks i am able to go as maintinance where i am charged $4 a session, which i figure is pretty cheap. I guess once you add it up it's not so cheap at $48 a month if you go to every class. It is kind of inconvenient also, if you work full time. Mine is Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10:30 am- 11:30am. So if you work you could see where it would become a problem. I don't so no problem. In our phone book, it shows the hospital then list all the different departments. That is where i found the pulmonary/cardiac rehabilitation program. You could go to your local hospital and ask if they know of one if they don't have one. I would recomend it thought. Working out with people that are on the same level as me makes it alot more encouraging to show up and do my best. Best of luck.~JeRi
