question on Christianity

Are Catholics considered Christian? I thought they were, but someone told me they weren't.....

Okay, additionally, she told me that Catholics are part of the Anti-christ.....is this a basic Christian belief, or rather fringe? I am essentially confused.

Last I checked, the Catholics still worshipped Christ and thus were Christians. So it doesn't seem they're "part of the Antichrist," whatever that's meant to entail. I hope your friend's opinion represents the fringe, but who knows? Hostile, narrow views of all kinds seem to be creeping scarily into the mainstream, particularly in religion. To see how some feel betrayed by this, check out Jimmy Carter's last few books on the subject. Whatever you might think of his presidency, Carter speaks very sagely about some alarming religious currents in this country.

Okay, coming from a Catholic family (although we don't really practice or agree with most of the religion), Catholics are Christians, and whoever said they are part of the Anti-Christ...well, to put it gently, really must hate Catholics. I know that most Catholics and Christians don't really get along (at least from what I've seen and heard), but that's taking it to the extreme. As far as I know, it's not a wide-spread Christian believe and certainly more of the fringe.

It was believed that an "Anti-Christ", who was suggested as being a devil, was to indicate the apocolypse, from my understanding. Some (maybe most) religions believe an "Anti-Christ" may come, and fear that possibility. (Perhaps an elaboration of Kiwilady's comment)
As may have been mentioned before, Christians are those religions (or individuals) who believe in Christ. Catholics, would be more of a specific type of Christian, but even that has another large catagory (i.e. Roman Catholic, Orthodox Catholic, Eastern Orthodox Catholic, etc.).
In my studies of Catholosism in my Roman Catholic Church, I heard nothing said about an "Anti-Christ", but was told "Jesus Christ will come again".

This is based on recollection, so someone may either correct, agree, or expand on my opinions.

But, I'd have to agree with Lilith, the person stating they were a part of the Anti-Christ, was either a devil worshipper, former Christian who hated that religion, or of some odd deviation from a Christian religion, most of us are un-familiar with. (Now, if they said they were a part of "The Body of Christ", that would be a totally different statement!)

Look at it this way; the "christians" who say that about Catholics are probably the same ones who tell Jews they are going to hell. Mormons also suffer this type of bunk.

Here's my take. Catholics and Protestants both consider themselves Christians. However, a lot of the Protestant churches (Baptist, Christian, Presbrytarian(sp), Assembly of God, some Methodist, etc) believe you have to be a "born again Christian" meaning you have to not only believe in Christ as the Son of God, but also ask/accept Christ into your life for salvation, where I don't think Catholics believe this step is necessary (Catholics correct me if I'm wrong). I'm not sure how they think you get to Heaven...maybe by being baptised, being a good person and a few good deeds?

As far as the Antichrist thing goes...I don't believe this necessarily, but have heard that some speculate that the Antichrist could rise up out of the Catholic church as a Pope or something of the sort and since there is such a huge number of Catholics, steeped in tradition, that they would readily follow the antichrist because they are trained to respect their highest earthly figure. Again, just speculation by some and no one knows any of this to be true, but since you asked I thought I would share what I had heard.
Does this help or confuse you even more?
Hope

Speaking of Jewish afterlife, did you see the last episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm? You apparently get to play golf with Ben Hogan and have a date with Marilyn Monroe. That's where I want to go. On the other hand, Jewish Hell, which Woody Allen depicted in Regarding Henry (and where he's no doubt headed, G-d love him), doesn't seem half bad either, at least compared to Dante's version and to the parts of New York Woody never goes to. Whatever the eschatological destination, at least, there's bound to be lots of yuks!

Acording to John....the antichrist is anyone who does not believe that Jesus was the Son of God. Since you implied one person, I expect you mean the "end of days" antichrist. The Bible says several things about this. It does say that it will be a influential and powerful leader . I guess that is why that is out there, who is more powerful than the pope? The bibles teachings go a bit further but in an attempt not to to inflame some people I will not elaborate.

Please see the following.

"I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and know that no lie is of the truth. Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also." (1 John 2:21-23 RSV)

Seems to me, you gotta have credentials for comedy to go!!! Like Billy Crystal, Mel Brooks, but I wonder if that means Sammy Davis, Jr. is also invited?? (me to?)

If Jew Hell is where the party is, I don't wanna miss out!!

as for the Anti-Christ, I thought he was supposed to become a senator, or something, like in that movie, "Damion"!

Lilith, don't forget Bill, your purple dragon!! (The life of the party!!)

Oh, yea, the Catholic's "reborn" view, they basically figure that at birth, they were baptized, then confirmed their baptism at the age of...(I think I was..) 10, so the "born again" wasn't necessary for a third time.

Kinda skewing from the point, but the oddest thing, I had always dated someone NOT in the Roman Catholic sect, they were usually Presbyterian, or Baptist. Happened to marry twice to Buddhist; I'm wondering if a hint is being thrown, there?!

Actually, the dragon's name was Bob, but I think I like the name Bill better, so I'll be sure to bring him (and load up his saddle with Doritos!)...*lol*

As far as the Buddhist thing goes, it sounds like a hint to me... And yeah, I also heard that the Anti-Christ was supposed to be a senator or the prez himself. Some people think George Bush is the Anti-Christ...I think they're giving him too much credit *lol*
