really freaky checkup yesterday

Yesterday I had a checkup at the clinic. My pfts are way down from last time. Here's some very odd results and I wanted to share to see if anyone has had something similar happen to them or had thoughts on this.
fvc-82 fev1-48. small airways were 20. I blew out 1.7 liters.
Last pfts were fvc-94 fev1-70, small airways 25 and I blew out 1.8 liters.
Very strange-the amount I blew out was not a dramatic difference according to the doctors, and the fvc and small airways aren't comparatively a huge difference either in relation to the HUGE difference that the fev1 is. This had them (and me especially) puzzled. When you look at my history there is nothing like this. If I'm down, I'm down all over.
The oddest thing is, I feel great. I was just away for 2 weeks in FL. I did ocean kayaking 1-2 hrs each day (not 'calm' relaxing kayaking-ocean is much harder), and walked 2 miles every day. While I do love activity like this, I usually get winded and have coughing fits but the weirder thing about this vacation was that I noticed I had so much energy-I wasn't coughing alot and didn't feel the need to take breaks.

The docs 2 theories are that 1, The day I came home and had my appointment was one of the coldest days so far in nyc. The wind chill yesterday was like 5 degrees and I had to park and walk a few blocks to get to clinic. I have reactive airways as I am very asthmatic. I didn't feel spasms at the time but when I got home later my lungs hurt so bad I realized the cold affected me more that I thought. Breathing in was painful.
2, While I was away I didn't bring my vest. I used an acapella-which I used every day as directed but its new to me, and perhaps I just don't respond well to it..?

The doc said that normally if I came in with pfts like that my butt would be slapped in the hosp asap. But as I'm feeling so great and she said, looking and sounding so great-something isn't right. We're hoping its the cold. My instructions are to do 3 vests per day, I'm on Cipro and Zithro, and to keep up with exercise but cut down a little. For 2 weeks I did 2.5 hrs of hard sweaty exerc everyday...of course bc of this I expected to rock the pfts, so my let down was huge.

I had a mini breakdown in the docs office. Its one thing if I know I've been slacking off and not being dicsiplined, but when u work off your a** for something...the frustration is huge.

Hey Christian, I'm going with option 1. Sounds very possible.. I know we all get crazy of the numbers ( i'm no different ) but the most important thing is how you feel, right? Let us know the outcome. ~ <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0"> joni

First of all, I have TOTALLY had breakdowns at the dr's office!!!

Second, I agree w/ Beleache. Sometimes PFTs are flukey. Could you go in soon and do a "doover" just to check? there are so many things that affect those numbers, and an asthma attack could do it. give yourself another shot.

good luck!!!!

I'm going with #1 too. Also, don't discredit the stress of air travel on our bodies. Then to have to haul yourself into the city to boot. Yeah just too much on your little body. Get back into the swing of things - keep up the good habits and I'm sure things will snap back into gear.

Hey at least you feel great :) Cipro eh? I didn't think you use that much. Does it work against cepacia? I'd say if you feel junky at all in a week see if you can add Bactrim. Cipro might lower your PA and let the staph act up. Bactrim is likely very effective against your staph.

So how you do like the acapella? Do you have the one that comes apart? That is the newer version but unfortunately does not work as well for me. They used to have two versions - one for lower lung function and one for higher. The one piece green is the older "high" version and my fav. When they came out with a new version they did away with 2 versions. Now I don't think it's as effective for anyone. It's called the Acapella Choice. Funny they call it "Choice" when they took away any choice LOL.
