Riding Horses

Thank you so much! I love my horse, I miss him so much. I haven't seen him in over a year! (He's in training in Missouri) The last show we were at is where the winning photos were taken, the American Royal.
I'm so glad to hear that your daughter is so healthy. Working around the barn is certainly plenty of a workout on it's own, much less riding, too!

HOW BEAUTIFUL!
Your horse is amazing. I grew up with horses but have such bad allergies that I cannot step foot inside my moms barn without practically dying. It's not even worth it to me. So sad b/c I love to ride, and go FAST.
Does your horse have an extension on its tail, I have seen very few horses with real tails that look that nice. His face is beautiful. What a treasure!
Enjoy the riding. I'm a little jealous here.
Plus I live in Ohio and I'd freeze my butt of if I had to go out and clean the barn when it's 0 degrees outside.

I was feeling yucky last night and rode rode rode until I felt better. I have a hard time pushing myself through a lot of things, but riding I will. I felt better when I was done, even though I coughed my head off the entire time, I think it disturbs the people I ride with. But like a friend told me, its on them, not me!</end quote></div>

Love this story. I'm just for the first time getting into riding. I love horses and have always wanted one, but for now the main reason for getting into it is to improve my breathing. Glad to hear it works for you. Hope it does for me too.

Hi ChippedAway, I just love your horses, thanks for sharing picts of them!!! I can't imagin spending so much time with horses, it would be wonderful! Espcially raising a horse. When I was little, I used to ALWAYS ask Santa for a horse. Year after year, I never understood why Santa wasn't bringing me one. I remember my parents finally told me, well Santa probably can't bring a horse for you b/c it wouldn't down the chimney. I imeediately responed, "Well, let's leave the door open!" Santa never heard my call......I love them. I'm just so excited to be able to finally get into it now.

Chipped Away,
Where are you in Minnesota? We live in Dayton. I can't wait to tell my daughter about how you cleared up when you were riding.... She'll like that. We spend our summer days riding out on trails and go to ocassional horse shows. Where do you usually show your horse? We're hoping to plan several camping trips this year. I took Danielle's horse camping last year, just to test it out and it was a blast! I can' hardly wait for spring!

I just sent you an email before coming here and saw your post. Yes, I think riding and exercise in general really helps keep lungs clear. DD's doctor says it's almost as good as bronchial drainage. We've also decided to not do as many gaming shows, my gelding is going to be 19 this year and even though he's an arabian and will probably live into his 30's (I hope), I think it's time for the two of us to enjoy more relaxing time together. DD and I are also tired of standing around and waiting all the time at the gaming shows.

HI-
I guess I came on this thread a little late.....
I just wanted to tell you I ride too. I do English. And the exercise is amazing! I have CF arthritis, so unfortunately I've had to cut back a little. Anything like that on my legs can be painful. But, I hope to be riding more when spring comes. Its eaasier in the warmth.
I have 2 Arabians, (the supermodels of the barn-brats), two Welsh ponies (who are really my little sister in law's), a buckskin mustang pony, a quarterhorse (who is there as our safe packer for people that visit and want to ride), and a big fat black mutt guy.
We live on a split farm with our inlaws on the other side of the property. So, all my inlaws kids (my brother and sisters in laws), take care of them and ride them. It's nice for me, b/c I can avoid the work in the barn when its cold out.
Anyway-I encourage riding to ANYONE with CF! It's great exercise, your lungs bounce up and down. My doc once told me that a half hour trot was equal to 4 or 5 clappings!
And also the emotional benefits it provides. The bond you get with the animal, listening to it as it moves, all that is so great for emotional health. Its like an antidepressant!

Hi! I'm a 25 year old mother of a 17 month old with cf. I've always been really into riding, and just horses in general. Although I haven't ridden in a few years, I've been wondering about how good it could be for my son when he's older. I'd love to get back into it myself. Reading these posts has pretty much made up my mind, so what age do you think is old enough to get him into it?

Anon, good for you for looking into it now and wanting to get back into it yourself, that is great!

I started riding at age 5, and that was a bit young, most don't start em until 7 or 8, but you can always try and see how it goes. I'm 22, almost 23, now and still riding as much as I can.

My friend and I went on a 17 mile trail ride on Sunday, what a work out! It was fantastic, I couldn't think of any other way to spend the day that would have made me as happy. Actually it was right next to Cheryl2424's place and we stopped for a chit chat and to see her beauty horses!

Gina,
Danielle is sick again. It looks like we'll be bringing her in for a tune-up on Friday. This really is frustrating for her and all of us. She did awesome at the youth WSCA show last Sunday-she took 1st in pole's and even beat the class of 14-17 year old's above her. She's now gaming in a full cheeck snaffle, no tie downs or anything and Daisy ran that pattern so smoothly! It was perfect communication<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> And they did it in 12 seconds!

Do you know if this hot weather can aggravate her lungs to the point of making her wheeze and cough so much? She is not allergic to horses, hay, dust, cats, or grass......

I have just had to give up my horse due to the stables being sold.

I mucked him out and rode him pretty much like any girl without cf would. He gave me so much love and understood everything that was going on in my life.

I miss him so much.
