self medication in schools? please help!

Tonya, my CF clinic has already sent a letter stating the medical and emotional needs for children with CF to be able to take their own meds at lunch. No luck. We've got a major meeting with the district to update our plan 504.
Thanks Bill!
I'm going to print out the pertinent parts of that law and bring it to our meeting. I'll also start working on our legislators to change that for the state of Kansas! I'm afraid people with CF are a minority that is not addressed legally here yet.

It would be great if this could be enacted in every state. The State Representative im Massachusetts who introduced this law, has a child with CF.

It's been quite a while, but I know that my parents had to fight for my ability to take my enzymes (and keep them on my person) at lunchtime. I think this issue is generally complicated by the fact that A LOT of kids are on meds these days (ADHD, etc.). Schools are afraid letting one kid take meds in school will be a slippery slope. I agree that you need to speak with your son's clinic. Certainly taking them at on his own at lunch has medical and psychological benefits. Good luck!

We ended up getting the district to see things our way FINALLY! YAY! Thanks for the help, ideas and encouragement!! We brought printouts from different state legislation including Massachusetts and Florida as well as printouts on why it's so very important for children with CF to self medicate. My son carries his enzymes now in a baggie in his pocket, takes them like it's no big deal and I'm so happy!

It's hard that we have to battle so much with school administrators when we're battling this stupid disease!! YAY for school districts that work with their students!!

call me thick, but how is anyone going to know he's taking his enzymes on his own? can't he just pop em in when he's ready to eat, and skip the nurse's office altogether??
