so my friend has a staph infection on her leg. is that the same as the staph some of us culture in our lungs? I do culture staph, but with her active infection should i be more cautious? she doesn't have cf.

staph is staph, whether it's in your lungs or on your skin. it's the same bacteria.

i would be more cautious around anyone with a cold/flu/bacteria infection anywhere on the body

Staphylococcus (staph for short) is staph no matter what the infection with staph, but there are also different species of staph that cause different types of infections. Your friend probably doesn't know the species - they don't usually go all the way to species within a lab at a hospital/dr's office (genus would be the staphylococcus). I wouldn't tell you not to be cautious, but chances of you developing a lung infection from her leg wound is less likely. Just practice better handwashing for yourself while you are around her.
