Staying Positive

for you CF positive ppl, how do you stay motivated & so pepped up?

1. I don't alienate my family by telling them that they owe me anything. I don't bitch at them and I don't pick fights with them.

And I focus on my family's needs and not my own. When I talk to them, I try to focus on what they're doing and what they like. Family can be great support.

2. I avoid those with "poor me" attitudes like the plague. I don't care what your situation is, there's always a bright side and I surround myself with people who share a similar attitude towards me. You will attract people that are like you.

3. I focus on the fact that I live in the best country in the world. I have access to better healthcare than any other CFer on this planet. If I was born in any other country, I wouldn't have the life I have right now. I won life's lottery and I am incredibly grateful to be an American. I'm grateful to my great grandmother for having the courage to leave her home country in search of a better life for her family.

4. I keep myself busy. I work. I socialize. I am politically active. I read.

I know people with CF that are your age (some on this site) who don't have your sour attitude, so although you may find it convenient, it's not your age.

Well, I know I stay positive by looking at all the good things in life, eventhough I do get a little down when things are not good, like not feeling good or for some reason have to have picc line put in etc... I try to better myself and try to stay as healthy as possible to help me stay positive. I look at the good instead of the bad. If Im down Ill get myself right back up again. When I pray I just thank the Lord for what health I have and to ask him to bless me and to help me be happy and healthy and a more better person. I know Im only 26 and not 44 and Im not even sure if by that time Ill feel like I do now, Id hope I will. I hope I helped you out some.

I just wanted to say I don't think it's an "age" thing either. I think it's more of a "how far along you are" thing. Because there are people worse off than you who are more tired of it than you are (even though many are younger).

Having said that, I agree with Amy a lot. Not 100%, but mostly. There are people who are flat-out dying and have better attitudes than you have shown us. Not saying you are incapable of better attitudes, but we can only go on what we've seen... and what we've seen hasn't been good.

A lot of those people who are flat-out dying and younger... have better attitudes than we've seen from you.

OH! And I should add. I'm not one of those people that's all "Oh my god, if you smile then everything in the world goes right." Sh*t happens. Sh*t happens all the time, whether you smile or not. But throwing yourself a 24/7 pity party isn't helping anyone, least of all you. You're allowed days like that. We ALL have days like that. But try to keep it to days, instead of weeks, months, and years.

Hi,

I don' t really know you, and I am not to familiar with your other posts....but I just wanted to say...I am sorry you feel the way you do. Being depressed is a hard thing, and sometimes peoples wheels just get stuck in the mud and not matter how hard they try they can't get out.

I don't usually stuggle to much with depression on a daily basis, though I have had some similiar feelings, sometimes the thought of doing my treatments for the rest of my life, overwhelm me. I don't usually stay feeling that way for long, and when I do feel that way, I usually post on here and get a little encourgament to "suck it up" and I do.

Again I don't know your situation and I wouldn't dare tell you how and what to do, I have not walked in your exact shoes. Sometimes on here I come across more whiney then I actually am in real life because I vent things out......as far as the peppy thing goes... I think it isn't so much the pep as it is making a decision to keep going

I feel like my fake pep that I had is wearing off, thank the Lord, and more now I am in a determination to live this life to the best of my ability, and enjoy things that I can only enjoy now while I am alive on earth.. because I believe you only get one chance to enjoy things here/

I do a lot of the things that Amy said she does. I try really hard to have a productive life, there is always someone worse off then you are, you can give to them, feeling productive and feeling useful goes a long way in helping a mood.

I keep very busy, way busy, some would argue to busy. A good friend of mine who just lost her husband to CF... told me that she is trying to find things in each part of her day to be grateful for.

I do this as well...and it seems to help

I hope and pray that you are able to get some help and a different perspective on life soon, but until you do,

I try to stay perked up but motivation is like a drug. The more we need it the more we get burnt out with it, and eventually start to feel no amount of motivation is enough because things are too far gone. Sorry I can't say that I have an answer to staying motivated. You said you no longer enjoy things you once did whether it's a good or bad day. Sounds like a change of scenery would help a little. What do you enjoy day to day? what still keeps you going?<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif" border="0">

I'm not a doctor, but you are showing classic sign of depression.

Let me say this, people with depression have an extremely difficult time dealing with physical illnesses. There is nothing shameful in needing medicine for this.
Before a/d's I would say "I know everyone goes through hard times, but with me it's endless and I'm tired of it" Now, with a/d's I can deal with the daily stuff and never think those thoughts.

I had people tell me the same thing about feeling sorry for myself. I too felt the same way - NO, I'm just SICK and TIRED! Again, the anti depressants helped me overcome that feeling of hopelessness. That's what it is you're feeling - hopeless.

With depression, you loose the ability to find happiness in the things you onced enjoyed. I know, I had the same thing.
Depression is hard, but a/d's can make it manageable.
Just like breathing treatments and anti biotics make CF manageable (verses not having either of those options), same goes for a/d's.

If I were you, I'd seriously consider a/d's
I know you said you have a hard time with them, but there a so many out their to choose from. It did take me a few years to find the right one, only because I'd give up trying...but once I found the right one, man - Now I wish I had been on them the past 20 years - it would have saved my mind from a lot of anguish!

Living with untreated depression brings a ton of stress. Lots of stress bring more sickness and fatigue. Sickness and fatigue brings depression. Withouth sounding like a commercial: You can stop the cycle.

Please give them another try
