i take a gel capsule turmeric by new chapter called turmeric force. being a liquid, you could squeeze it out and mix it with something sweet-the berry flavored applesauces are good for disguising things with my 3 yr old. (plus they're naturally flavored)
i don't know much about putting things in g-tubes, but my guess is you'd want to be careful with that. i'd also watch the dosage of herbs with little ones. these pills are made for adults. i'd cut the dose back as much as possible.
you can also try making rice seasoned with turmeric for her. my lo loves rice!

my understanding is (have to dig up the source though) is that you need huge amounts of the herb itself to have anti inflammatory action otherwise it is just good for digestion.

I have a 2 yo, so far I just mix a little bit into her food.

I would not give her any supplements that are for adults, but that is just MO.

Hi Ymikale,

I happened to see this thread thread today and you are indeed right about me using Turmeric at one time. Let me explain further and offer the research that I am aware of.

A few years ago, after doing really well, there was a huge fire in my neighborhood. The inflammation created by all the smoke sent me into a quick spiral down. In addition to P.A. I suddenly had MRSA. I used inhaled Tobi and Cipro. I had taken Cipro for a bladder infection in the past year too. Months later, suddenly I was resistant to ALL antibiotics except for one IV drug. I was stunned. Cipro has been known to do this (google for more info).

I went to a top infectious disease specialist at a major medical center and he told me that they would test me for combinations of antibiotics that in synergy could fight the P.A. strains that were resistant. I have seen this discussed here many times.

Instead, I wanted to try to find additional ways to fight inflammation and the resulting infections. I knew that if I could stay well and off of antibiotics for what I hoped could be a year, the sensitivities to the antibiotics might return. I added a few things to my anti-anflammatory regimin.

1) Hypertonic Saline which was not mass marketed yet.
2) NAC
3) Turmeric Capsules

I started doing better, the sensitivities came back, and the P.A. and MRSA stoped being picked up for about 2 years. (Swine Flu triggered one strain of P.A. last December)

My doctor asked me to stop the Turmeric Capsules because she read a study which demostrated a possible connection between long term, high dosage use of Turmeric and cancer. I stopped it and see no differece -- unless this was a contributing factor to P.A. returning with the Swine Flu. I was VERY sick with the swine flu and DID treat the P.A.

Originally, I chose to add Turmeric because of a CF Foundation study. The results were not in at the time and I made a choice to try it anyway (at the time not knowing the negatives).

Here is the information on the study and why they recommend against taking it in large quantities. My doctor has told me I can sprinkle it on my food (I don't.)

Please Note: Don't do ANYTHING that I do without consulting your doctor. Adding the above regimen if you are not identifying and treating asthma, allergies, and chemical sensitivities will probably not help much.

The key for me has been to reduce inflammation in the body, the lungs, open the airways, and get the mucus which holds bacteria OUT.

thanks for that info, nightwriter and sorry you had the flu!

I was not aware of that study but in any case I never give any supplements for adults to my daughter. I just sprinkle her food with curcumin.

And thanks to your advice we made many changes to our lifestyle and the envireonment (including leather sofa) and I strongly believe that she is doing much better now than a year ago, she even got over a major cold without it turning into an exacerbation!

Wait so your MRSA went away? Do you believe it to be because of the tumeric, NAC (btw what is NAC?), or just sensitivity being picked up again to the other antibiotics?

I've been on Vancro (in the hospital), Zyvox (allergic to something in it, gives me a really bad rash), septra, and cipro but I've been unable to lose it for an extended period of time. Vancro seems to work the best but I've only gotten that so far in hospital settings.

I don't want cancer though; that would suck.

Hi Ymikale,

I am so happy that your daughter is doing well after changing your environment. I can remember many years ago, that I used to say, like many people, "If I did NOT get colds, I might be pretty healthy."

So hearing that she had a major cold without an exacerabation after changing surroundings, lifestyle, and habits -- it means one less bout that could have caused lung damage, one less bout of not needing an antibiotic, which keeps bugs sensitive to antibiotics when they are needed.

There may be some things that you can do to ward off colds, or least reduce severity -- I've written about what I've done on here -- but you must ask your doctor to make sure anything I do is appropriate or adjust for child dosages.

Cool about getting a leather couch. I can tell you from my own experience, all the changes are worth the bother/inconvenience. Being sick is far worse.

Hi Static,

It would appear as though my MRSA has disappeared. At least I can say I never cultured it again. Or Staph for that matter which I used to culture often, many years ago.

I stopped culturing P.A. also for about 2 years (even though I am colonizied and have cultured mucoid P.A.), but it came back (one strain) when I got the Swine Flu which by the way, according to my doctor, can trigger things like P.A. to grow again.

I don't really know which of the things that I added caused the P.A. and MRSA to disappear. Maybe all of them. In addition, without treating the asthma component of CF, I wouldn't have been able to clear the mucus.

In other words, by following an anti-inflammatory regimen, lifestyle, etc. the stage would not have been set for these things to work.

BTW as mentioned the swine flu triggered my P.A.'s return -and I did treat it. A few months ago, it still appeared in a culture, but I feel fine, so it will be interesting to see if it disappears again. The question you are wondering is would I add back the Tumeric? The answer would be yes, if the P.A. makes me sick again -- and for a short term. Or 3 weeks on, one week off.

The problem with supplements is that they haven't been tested like prescription drugs. So how much to take? How often? Long term effects?

My doctor did tell me about the one study that said that turmeric may cause cancer long term. I'm sure it was a study with rats given very high doses. So I had been taking the turmeric capsules for about 2 years and stopped because my doctor asked me to.

Perhaps there will be other studies in the future. In the one the CF Foundation conducted, it that found that turmeric did not have much effect, but they used a fairly low dosage. I took a much higher dosage and may have reaped a benefit from it. I don't know.

You asked about NAC. It is something that many people here take. I do believe it has helped me a lot.
