Type 1 Diabetes and CF

Hi

My 12 year old son has just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (not cfrd) and also has CF. Just wondering whether there is anyone else out there who has type 1 also, and how things are going for you.

He has been really healthy from a CF point of view, hadn't had any antibiotics for 18 months. He lost weight suddenly and I recognised the symptoms for diabetes (drinking a lot of water and going to the toilet a lot). Ofcoure we thought he had cfrd.

He is now insulin dependent, but the good news is he has put on nearly five kilos in the last month.

Anyhow, I hope to hear from someone out there, thanks

First of all Welcome!

Although I have CFRD I am still rather unfamiliar with different situations regarding diabetes. How can/did they tell the difference between type 1 and CFRD?

Good to hear about the weight gain!!

Thanks for replying Melissa.

CF related is usually due to the pancrease/liver being damaged and not producing enough insulin AND/OR insulin resistance due to stress which produces cortisol and makes body more resistant to insulin or the use of drugs such as pregnisone (whatever it's called) steroid type drugs. Often with cfrd the body still produces some insulin.

With type 1 the body's immune system attacks the Beta cells which produce insulin and destroy them, which makes a person insulin dependent. That's my understanding anyhow, I've just done a crash course in diabetes so might have it wrong!!

PS they did a test to determine if there were antibodies in his system which indicated that he had type 1
