Hi my daughter Lauren is 97 lbs and is 15yrs. with severe developmental disabilities and she is nonverbal. Her CF Dr. just increased her ultrase to 5 pills/meals.....3/snacks based on her weight.
...............Seems like a high dosage to me what do you all think?
...............Also if you take the ultrase and then dont eat your meal or only a few bites; does that give you a stomach ache?
Maybe someone could let me know because Lauren can't. Thanks for all your help, Joan

Hey Joan,
I am a 38 y/o male (140 lbs) and I take 7-8 meals an 2-3 snacks - This is not an exact science. It depends on how much each individual needs and is very prone to "tweaking".
Lauren's new dosage does not sound too high to me (my 29 y/o brother takes the same amount as Lauren)
I have had stomach aches/problems WITHOUT enzymes. Absolutely none with proper dosage.

Im on ultrase mt 20s...I take 5-6 with meals and 4-5 with snacks. like steve said its not an excat science. I usually take my enzymes after i eat so I know whether or not to take more or less...and it depends on how fatty the meal is...like if its tacos take more..if shes feeling icky and just nibbles you dont need much. if you take your enzymes and dont eat or eat a tiny bit it "shouldnt" give any tummy aches. they get disolved and if there is nothing for the enzymes to do they just dont do anything and like everything else just get flushed out later.

I weigh a little less than 120... at 5'2". I take Ultrase MT 18s, 5 or 6 with meals, depending on the cheese/grease content. It doesn't sound like too too much for me. I've never *not* eaten anything after taken enzymes (at least not to my recent recollection), so I don't know if it results in any big stomach aches.

Just a suggestion, it should be okay to give her the enzymes right after she eats, then you'll be sure not to be giving her too much. If she only eats a couple bites, then you can give her just one or two pills. <img src="i/expressions/angel_ani.gif" border="0">

i am 20 years old and i weigh 104lbs. I take well i used to tak mt20s.. now i take creon 20's I take 4-5 with meals and 2-3 with snacks... The docs have a way of figuring out how many for your certain weight. I havew a problem with eating slow so i have to split my enzymes up, two right before and two to three after depending on how much i eat... I was having problems digesting my food so that helped me out. Enzymes only work for 30minutes after you take them so make sure she eats all of the food in that amount of time other wise she is gonna have a tummy ache... I did!! Anyways, i hope this helped out a little..

not to be rude or anything but my doc told me that it is no help to take enzymes only after you eat.. it cant help digest the food if its not going down with the food... I dont know but that is just what my doc said! I know from experience that I end up with a tummy ache if i dont have some before and after... since i eat slow! you can probably tell if by her stools if she is taking to much or not enough... but it sounds like the right amount to me!! when I was 87lbs a few months ago i was on 3-4 with meals... so... yah thats my scoop!!!

Its probably a personal preference on taking enzymes before or after a meal/snack. The truth is they stay working an hour before and after you eat. so if you take it before you have an hour to get your food in...if you take it after you have an hour of it working on your food. plenty of time..just to be on the safe side we will say 30 minutes. it might also depend on the enzyme itself but you can look on the drug pamphlets that are with the enzymes. i have also been told this by two different dieticians from two different cf centers. i have even have my cf doctor admit to me he rather me talk to the cf dietician about food troubles and enzymes because its her specialty. he said he knows enough but she knows alot more. i dont mean to sound rude either this is just what i have read and been told.

I am 5' 3" and weigh between 110-115lbs. I take Ultrase Mt 20 and take 5 with meals. I am sure you know this but one of the best ways to gage what should be taken is how soft and greasy the stools are. The more solid and firm the better. Just make sure that she doesn't get constipated.

11? Wow! Isn't there a limit to how many enzymes you can take? I remember my dietician saying 5-6 is about the most anyone should take, and after that it's time to switch up. I take Creon 20's though, so maybe it's different.

Does anyone know if the amount of enzymes needed with each meal corelates with the degree of pancreatic involvent ? I am just asking because since dx at 29 I was put on Pancrease MT 20 and I only need to take two, three max with meals. I am not underweight at all, in fact they are trying to get me to lose weight, which is so hard for me because of the amount of steroids I take. Since taking steroids I have gained about 40 lbs in two years. I am thinking that I only need to take two because maybe I am not that insuff. ???

Thanks

My daughter used to take 3 ultrase 16's, but now needs only 1 or 2 pancrecarb 8's. She eats a fairly low fat diet though.
