My Dad has decided that he's going to buy a vacuum cleaner that really sucks. He wants to get one of the 0 loss of suction ones but hasn't decided yet which one. Not many people know how to keep carpet quite as clean as cfers so I decided this would be the best place to ask. What vacuum do you use?

I don't know how much he's looking to spend, but I have a Rainbow vacuum cleaner, and although it's expensive, there is no filter to clean and it really sucks a lot of stuff up. My inlaws vacuumed their house with their normal vacuum cleaner and then they borrowed our rainbow, and they got tons more stuff up!!

You fill the "bucket" with water and put it in the base of the vacuum, and everything that the vacuum sucks up goes into the water. Then, you just empty the water and all the crap that was sucked up, either outside or into the toilet.

I think it cost us roughly $1,200. We have had it for about 7 years but we have definitely gotten a lot of use out of it (still works great) and there is no bag/filter/dust to deal with.

We have a Riccar -- has two or three filters, plus paper bags. I'm not a fan of bagless vacuum cleaners because when you empty them, the dust flies all over the place.

Well, with the bagless vacuums, I send one of the brothers out the back door to the compost pile in the corner of the yard with the canister. No problem for me. He went to walmart this afternoon after I posted and bought some sort of a hoover, so we'll see how it does. No guarantee that's the vacuum we'll settle with though, I won't let him open the box.
The one I was considering was the dyson no loss of suction thing with the ball, anyone know anything about it? The problem we have now is when we bought the last vacuum it was great, it really sucked, but has signifigantly decreased. We have dogs in and out of the house and a cat that stays in, really having carpet at all is an awful idea but putting down hardwood isn't really an option right now.

I've got an Oreck. I'm not sure I like my new one as much as my old one (the old one is 11 years old and still running fairly well. I just bought a new one bc they were on sale and not much more $ than the tune up my old one was needing, plus the new one has an extra layer of filtration and a "headlight"). I like the bagged ones too, over the bagless. My new Oreck was $199, and has a pretty good warranty too.

Also, while you're saving your pennies for hardwood, look at some of the "do it yourself" laminates. My bff has it in her house, and my MIL has it installed this year too, and they look pretty darn good these days, but are A LOT less expensive than actual hardwood <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> .

My riccar is an upright, however for an extra $25 bucks I bought the hardwood floor cleaner -- basically a floor sweeper with a 25' long hose that attaches to the vacuum cleaner for doing our hallways, living room and bathroom that all have hard surfaces.
