Vitamin D linked to lung Health

I am just now reading my RN magazine from February. I know, I know, but who had time before..Now I have more time on my hands then I know what to do with.

There is a big article in my magazine with research between Vitamin D and lung health...

After adjusting for things like age, gender, smoking history, level of physical activity, milk consumption, and Vitamin D supplements, the researcher found that individiuals with high vitamin D levels had SIGNIFICANTLTY better lung function than those with low levels. SPecifically researchers found a 106 ml difference in FEV 1 between those in the highest and lowest Vitamin D groups. FOr FVC, the difference was 142 mls.

Researchers say taht while their findings show a connection between vitamin D and lung health, further studies are needed to see if taking vitamin D supplements will help patients with respiratory disease.

My vitamin D level is the lowest of all my vitamin levels, I know they still need to research the connection with ppl who already have lung disease, but I thought it was inspiring enough to at least keep up with our vitamins and milk drinking.

thank you Jenn. I take a good multi and It has Vit D. I should get more sun which is linked to Vitamin D and I drink plenty of soy, milk and kefir that is loaded with Vit D

I know that a lack of Vitamin D can contribute to depression. That is why Sun light helps people who are depressed I believe.

I appreciate this because I do not think I take enough Vit D because I do not take the full dose of my multi at times.

great research, jen.

i would warn everybody against chugging tuns of vitamin D, however. one can overdose.

but just like jen said - nutritional levels are highly correlated with lung disease. the better nutrition that we all have, the better able our bodies are to fight off viruses and bacteria, as well as to control inflammation.

Good point Amy, I for sure am not advocating ODing on Vitamin D, just make sure you take your supplements or what ever the dose your doctor told you to take.

Risa, I think you are right about the Vitamin D being linked to depression, I am not real sure, but I know for seasonal affective disorders they prescribe phototherapy to help relieve symptoms....

I know since taking Vitamin D my bone density levels have stopped going down so much, so that is good enough for me.

yes, definitely i knwo you are not advocating OD-ing. but many people think that all vitamins are like vitamin C - the more the better. and this certainly isn't the case <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
