Hey notacrook, I am the mom of a five year old with CF. I couldn't stop laughing at your sweatpants and kitten comment! I refuse to be the "soccer mom", I'm a preachers kid (heehee), I can't live without my ipod, laptop, or cellphone, I love my old school pumas and ratty blue suede Airwalks. It really sucks that my son has CF and it took a long time for me to visit a site like this. When he was diagnosed I was inundated by wellwishers, prayers, and people who said "things happen for a reason"; I wanted none of it and avoided it at all costs. If my son feels the need to try pot when he's old enough, I'll bake him up a batch of brownies. I can't stand Barney or stupid mind-numbing happy little kid shows. My son's favorite songs are "Brass Monkey", "Smooth Criminal", and anything by Tool. I love being a mom, even when I get weird looks from preppy PTA parents. I despise sweater vests, pleated khakis, mini vans, and hairbows.

Trey is brilliant! Did you see the VH1 documentary about him and Dave Matthews going to Africa?

I bet you'd love Family Guy's take on the Teletubbies, or Sesame Street.

Well, just to join in the fun, I am 28 with CF. Saw the Dead in 95 a few times before Jerry died, and have partaken many (many) times in all that goes with the "Dead" scene. I can't divulge all my secrets on line, but I definitely haven't lived an unhip life. Though I'm probably too old to be considered hip -part of the reason that I kept my CF secret for so long (and in many cases it still is, though frequenting this site has been one way of admitting to it) was becasue I didn't want to be associated as bing like so many of the people I met at the clinic who were sick and did seem "unhip." I know now that if you spend a lot of time in the hospital and not living a "normal" life, you may indeed be a bit less hip - but this isn't the 70's or 80's anymore, and through this site I have met a lot of quite "hip" people whose lives are pretty darn normal. Hopefully you might run into them too.

Okay, my turn! Let's see...I don't have an iPod because I think they're overrated, but I do have an MP3 player...and I can put pictures on mine, so LOL. Anyway, I don't believe in God in particular and the "you're in our prayers" bit makes me want to vomit (no offence, that's just how I feel). I do use the f-word a lot (just not on this forum, obviously). Yes, I do smoke pot, but not on a regular basis. Other notes; I listen to Marylin Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Korn, and the Gorillaz... I play video games, and my favs are Devil May Cry 3 and Resident Evil 4. You might say I use RE4 as a stress-reliever. WEE!!! SHOTGUNS!!!! LOL. My best friend calls me evil...does all that qualify as hip? Oh, and stupid people bug the sh*t out of me, and I have the gall to tell them so. Hmmm...you know, reading all this over, I think I'd qualify myself as edgy, not hip...

Anyway, I decided to post here not because I was looking for a support group, but because I thought it would be interesting to "meet" others in my same situation. In all actuality, I'm not too bothered by CF in general (at least not the imminent death aspect). Everyone's gotta die from something, right?

Oh, and my mom used to be one those girls who signaled the flag for illegal drag races in her youth. No kitten sweaters for her! ^_^

Woody Allen? Sedaris? Phish? Guess it doesn't take much to be the hippest guy at the clinic nowadays. To avoid being so passé, you really ought to look into the latest pornography from Michael Winterbottom, bone up on Michel Houellebecq's latest antisocial rants, and start listening to that music that sounds like the air conditioner running at various levels. Then you'll at least at the edge of last year's mainstream. And stop reading Salon.com -- it's dulling your sensibility. Read only Brit music magazines with circulations under 200, or, just for old time's sake, Modern Drunkard. Pour out your tequila and buy some genuine illegal absinthe over the internet, and don't forget to tell everyone it's making you insane but that Kerouac said all American authors are insane. Oh, and pack away your atheism along with your summer courderouys -- 13th Century Rhenish mysticism is back in vogue.

CF itself is still hip, though not as hip as in the days of "heroin chic." Still, if anyone in Pumas questions this, explain who Bob Flanagan was and then threaten to nail your hoo-hoo to a plank. Either that, or learn to stop caring whether you do or don't live up to someone else's superficial idea of what a "hipster" is. Have fun!

Dunno if I am hip or not, I would say I am more of a low key geek! I believe in some form of God, I LOVE the Clash, I don't have an Ipod and I love PC games. I play World of Warcraft, Counter-Strike and other games like that. I don't drink or smoke and I don't go out to bars or clubs. I would rather bowl mini golf go to the movies or read a good book. And my mom is definitely not a kitten sweater mom!!

What I find funny is you say "hip" and when I hear someone say "hip" i laugh because its such an old word that no one uses. HA! hip lol....ok sorry i didnt mean to make ya mad. welcome to the boards. i like my own stuff. to much to name. and i have tried pot before (in the words of my friend candice) *shock gasp horror* yes miss gooddy goody (as some will say) has tried pot....never smoked i ate it...and someone here still owes me some pot recipies. lol jk. i drink on occasion. my favorite drink so far is smirnoff (sp?) like i said its on occasion so i havent tried many drinks. i like so many kinds of music it would be pointless to say what i like best or name my favorite band. hmmm yeah i dunno whatelse. oh yeah and i would suggest getting more into the boards, post your own questions because i know for a fact at least one person (if not more) here would be going through the same thing.

O_O omg MANDA!

k so I'm not hip and dear god I wouldn't want to be. Normal should now be considered abnormal. People have problems, everybody has problems. I don't feel the need to shape myself into some little mold to be 'hip, cool, l33t, whatever' I like who I am. ::shrugs:: All of these people have lives, on these boards though they do share one common factor CF in some way shape or form. Guess I really don't know where I'm going with this, but I do have to say that not everybody has to do a certain thing to be cool or hip or whatever you consider it, it's all a mindset.

I also dont mean that you have to like the things that i listed to be "hip" -- that wasnt my definition - just a few things that i was thinking.. i wasnt even saying "why cant we talk about pop culture" on these boards -- i have no interest.. i was just curious if there were other CFers who feel the same way that i do sometimes...

thanks for the responses tho.. keep them coming

Quote

Originally posted by: Anonymous
I could certainly be wrong, but it may be that "hip" people with cf as you call it do not care about hearing what other people say about cf. Some ignore the fact that they even have cf and do like you said and abuse their bodies or do whatever feels good at the time because "they are going to die anyway". That may be part of the reason you are looking for. Good luck.

yeah, that's exactly what i said.
and i expected that response along the way.

Notacrook - I feel like I know exactly what you're going through. And I also
know that "hip" is the right word to describe it. Maybe "mod" would work as
well. And if people have no idea what you mean by that, you know that they
are not in the same boat.

Welcome to the boards. It sounds like you made a nice first step.

Hey Wonderlost!
Lucky you to see Jerry! I've only seen the Boys since '98. But I followed Phish and now String Cheese Incident.
I party as hard as I work and my iPod is full. I swear like a sailor, love Starwars and Jack Daniels, have gotten arrested and caught doin' it in a hotel utillity closet!

But I worked my butt off to get my BA and I'm applying to PhD programs now.

I'm a mom without a mini van (though I'd like one with a 3rd seat) and no kittens on my clothes. I'd pierce my belly button if my husband would let me. If I had a nice chest, I'd probably have flashed it by now. I have my Mom's trucker mouth and would prefer an ice cold bottle of Bud to any hard liquor. I've never smoked or ate pot. Hell I never even saw it until my 20's. No I-pod, can't afford one right now. If I had one I would only listen to it while exercising anyway. My kids are my life right now and I guess that's how it's suppose to be. I fumble through Barney to see my kids delight. No interest in video games and the only culture I really see right now is a small town theater show 3 times a year. Maybe not 'hip' or 'cool' but that's good and what makes us happy. As long as I'm laughing and having fun, that's all that matters. Oh I have skechers.

Maybe the real question is "what is your passion?"

I don't see how CF has a lot to do with a person's cultural affiliations -- except that they're likely to be Caucasian ones. (Maybe the more interesting search would be for "hip-HOP diseased people.") I think your responses show that "hipness" or lack thereof has much more to do with a person's age, set and setting, background, and plain inate sensibility. Even if CF does compel many people to avoid certain activities you consider hip -- smoking, say, or drinking the good stuff -- it's still rash to characterize them therefore as unsophisticated kitten-shirt folks. You've created a false dichotomy; there are many possibilities in between, as these posts demonstrate. But I think you know all of this and are just trying to stir things up. "God" love you for it. For the record, I always swear when I have a kitten on my shirt -- before swatting it off.

Whoah, my *mom* uses the word hip!!! Way too old fashioned fo rme Im afraid. I own an ipod, laptop, listen to all sorts of music, watch Family guy (which btw is hilarious) and enjoy socialising in general. I don't smoke. I wouldnt want to be considered 'hip', (makes me imagine my dad coming to a disco and starting to do the 'night fever' dance-creeeeepy!) So I'd consider myself 'normal' and an individual.

I was referred to as a "hipster" last week..I don't think I really like the sound of that...most all of the hipsters here in Detroit suck! But I'm hip and with it, if you will...I play drums in a band, i've got a mohawk, own an ipod with 2,000 songs on it, 3 pair of puma's..said the f'word a cool 100 times today..i don't do the pot thing because i'm a.d.h.d and don't need it but i have an occational drink. I like good wine and irish whiskey...

CF'ers are realllllll cool!

Haha I was just realizing I am practically the only person on here with an iPod, and most other people claimed too poor to have one. Well, I don't think I would be owning one except for the fact my friends all ganged up and bought me one for my sweet sixteen. The $200 a normal kid would have for an iPod in my family probably gets redirected towards prescription co-pays. lol
