XRAY yields "changes" yet seldom coughs

My husband took our daughter in for a chest xray today...he's not a radiologist, but did think he noticed that the right lung looked different than the left lung. Of course, we're trying not to speculate until her doctor calls with his review.

My questions: If she showed "changes" in her last xray over a year ago...no increase in cough since that time...was also started on Pulmozyme after her last XRAY...still no increase in cough (she only coughs a couple of times after sleeping, never during vesting)...why would we continue to see "changes" (if this is the case after today's xray) without an increase in cough?

Has your little one's xray showed "changes" while they seldom cough?

What did your child's doctor recommend when "changes" were present without outward symptoms?

Her doctor is suggesting a brochoscopy if today's xrays concern him...possible hospitalization...poss CT scan...

DS never coughs unless he's coming down with something.

He has never ever gotten a clear xray at the local cf clinic and the description on the report has read infiltration (pneumonia), thickening and other things; however, we've then gone on to the cf clinic in the city for xrays, ct and lung scans and his lungs are clear.

So basically we don't trust the local clinic and have stopped having xrays there. The xrays in the city are done at a children's hospital with numerous radiologists on staff who are familiar with cf.

Emily's 'healthy' chest films a couple years ago were completely normal. When she had pneumonia early in the year, her xray showed findings consistent with pneumonia that anyone would have, with the addition of mucus plugs typically seen in cf patients. Her healthy films now show some changes caused by her cf. At that time, treatment due only to that wasn't mentioned. However, she will be due for a chest CT at her upcoming annual appt... I am curious to know how that will look.

Her baseline symptoms have also changed over the course of the last few years. She does cough every day, more when vesting than she used to, and her illnesses have changed in nature as well. So in her case, any changes on film would be consistent with what we see clinically.

my daughter never coughs unless she is getting a bug...but her xrays show what is "consistant with progressive cystic fibrosis"....its tough to hear, because we often want to think that if they show no "symptoms" that the lungs arent getting worse, but unfortunatley with cf being a progressive disease we can slow the progression of the lung disease but cannot (YET) stop it.

Thank you for your replies! Good news...the XRAY showed mild improvement since last year (pre-Pulmozyme). So grateful that we switched doctors/centers. She wouldn't have been on Pulmozyme had we not switched. The clubbing is obviously still there, but it's not as concerning to me in light of the XRAY improvement. Thank God!

Hooray for good news! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Glad the Pulmozyme has been helping and you were able to see tangible evidence! Emily's pft's have consistently been about 10% higher in the year+ she's been on it vs. the numbers she had before, so we know it's been good for her too.
