How were your children treated when they first cultured pseudomonas? Also, how old were they?

My daughter just cultured it and I'm curious about how others were treated. Thanks

It all depends on which strain of pseudomonas you have and which meds that strain is resistant to. It is not a cut and dry selection of meds for everyone that cultures pseudomonas. My treatment usually consists of a combination of Tobramycin and Fortaz.

Our daughter was 4 yrs old when she cultured for the 1st time. She was on Cipro for 1 month and stays on inhaled tobramycin until she cultures negative 2-3 times. She cultured Nov 2004 and received her first clean culture in July 2005. Each time she gets a positive culture she goes back on the Cipro for 1 month and double doses the tobramycin for 1 month.
Hopefully she will culture negative again next week and we can have her off the tobramycin by the end of the year.

I think that first pseudo culture is always hard. It was right before my son's 1st birthday (at his diagnosis, actually) when he 1st cultured it. They treated him with an oral anti-b. and TOBI once a day. He's cultured it since & had TOBI 2x per day - that TOBI is amazing stuff. I'll notice a difference in his breathing and even his energy level after one dose. Hang in there.

Ethan Sky was 15 months when he first cultured pseudomonas. With him being so young, they of course did not test his sputum but just whatever was in his throat. We are a family that is very hesitant to do any treatment that is not proven absolutely necessary. With that, giving our son an inhaled treatment 2 times a day, that tastes terrible and takes 1/2 hour each time was much to hard to do without an absolute diagnosis. So.....we had him cultured 2 weeks later in which he came up positive for staph and we had him cultured at 18 months and he is still just culturing staph.
Hope that helps!!

My daughter is 3 1/2 and just cultures pseudomonas. She is taking inhaled TOBI twice a day for 4 weeks.

Out of all these treatments....I wonder what works best. It worries me a little that treatment is so different for everyone.

You may want to see the thread "ivs vs. inhaled tobi", it has some info on what treatments people chose with the initial culturing of pseudomonas.

On a completely separate note-- ehtansky, is your son's name Ehtan or Ethan?

Coll,
His name is Ethan. When I initially logged in, I guess I was typing too fast and it ended up Ehtan. I still do that every once in a while, but now I know to check my spelling.

Cipro is my old standby, but because I have recently cultured a new strain of pseudomonas we made some changes. I now alternate Tobi & Colistin aeresols & take Bactrim DS every day. They are holding off on my Cipro until I really need it. It has always worked wonders for me & I would really hate to lose it. One because it works well & two because its oral & not iv or neb med

Hi

My daughter Emma was just diagnosed this May at 22 months. I was so upset when I found out. The doctors placed her on Pulmozyme and TOBI. I could see a big difference in a few days! It's been amazing. It was hard giving her the treatments at first because she hates the way TOBI smells and tastes. Initially we were trying to give her all treatments when she was awake, but she fought us too much. Her doctors told us we could give them to her asleep and that has helped. I also got a new compressor, Mobilaire 50psi, and it's amazing too. It cut the time in half!
