8 year old with foul smelling gas

Hi, My daughter is 8 years old and has Cystic Fibrosis. For the past 4-5 months she has had foul smelling gas. She is getting very upset about this because the kids have been teasing her at school. Her doctor increased her enzymes and put her on an acid reducer but these changes havn't helped. If anyone has any ideas to decrease the gas I would really appreciate it.

Hmm...it could be her diet. Eating stuff that's too spicy, high in fat, etc. That being said, CFer's are known for their paint peeling gas.

I don't have CF; my son has CF; we both stink. Which is to say that gas is not confined to those with CF so there can be other causes (which of course won't make your daughter any happier).

I wonder if anyone out there with CF has tried "Beano", which I see advertised as an anti-gas product.

I've tried Beano. It works somewhat for me, but like I've said - and a lot of people I'm sure will agree with me, us CFer's are infamous for our paint peeling farts.

Hi Liz,

Do you happen to know why people with CF have foul smelling gas? My daughter passes gas numerous times a day. Is that normal for someone with CF? We do give her fatty foods because we were told to by her dr. Does anyone have any ideas how she should handle this problem at school?

I don't have cf but my daughter does. I believe as she has gotten older she has been able to control when she passes gas (somewhat). I know she has no problem letting it rip around those in her family lol but when she is at school or out in public she very seldom farts. I don't know how healthy that is but that is what she does. And there is definitely nothing quite like a cfer's gas!!

I'm assuming that the bad gas is from our digestive problems, and the fact that we don't absord things very well. All I can say is make sure she is taking enough enzymes for the real fatty stuff she eats. I know I have to take more enzymes when I'm eating fried foods as opposed to everyday stuff. As she gets older I'm sure she'll be able to control it more. Hope this helps somewhat.

Welcome to the world of CF. My gas has been pretty bad as long as I can remember. (Hey, where's the little 'gas' emoticon to insert here?)
I wouldn't worry about it too much & if you can't keep from worrying, ask the doctor what they think.
I agree that what you eat can make a difference, but mine will always be stinky and I can't change that
