you should do albuterol first and then do the vest. did the doctor tell you to do it that way? I can't remember are you seeing a cf specialist? here's why. the albuterol opens you up and then the vest shakes things loose. if you are doing the albuterol while doing the vest your airways aren't open and the loose mucus/coughing the vest is causing you is counterproductive because your airways are fighting the upward movement of the mucus becuase they are restricted. it would be good to use either the acapella or flutter (or huff coughing or autogenic drainage if you are diligent to do it correctly and take the time to learn the technique...now is probably not the time) for getting the mucus out. some believe the vest gets mucus out but my doc and I believe it mostly just moves it which makes it loose and then you need to actively work to get it out with another method.

Occasionally you do it twice a day?

I would think you should be doing it twice a day all the time and then with this increased cough...3x per day. If not the albuterol at least the clearance.

hope this helps.

Bonnie,

When I get times of incessant coughing, it is always because there is mucus down there that is not getting up. What I do is start eating extra salty pretzels. Something about the salt breaks up that mucus and brings it right up.....works every time! Another thing that works (but it not as tasty) is slices of raw onion.
Hope this helps.
