Did you know that approx. 98,000 people in the country die every year due to medical mistakes???????? It is right up there with the top killers, along with cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Wow. I didn't know it was that bad until I read an article yesterday in this months Good Housekeeping magazine. The article is written by a mom who lost her 18 month old due to medical errors. Mainly miscommunication. Sometimes, while in the hospital, I have caught myself saying to my very attentive husband, "They are medical professionals, honey, they know what they are doing." Well, yeah, probably. BUT mistakes happen. We never take our eyes off of what Zoe's nurses and docs do while she is in. Of course, we can't see what goes on in surgeries. We actually have a 'reputation' on the cf floor....as the parents who are "very meticulous about their daughter's care". Oh well.
Anyways, for your info....her site is josieking.org

Nice to know I'm in good company.

Our Dr's are great, but most residents have yet to learn that they have to listen to parents and as a teaching hospital 90% of the "MD's" in this building are residents.

I can see how it could happen, but it is still amazing we don't do a better job. Maybe we could find the $$ for reform if we just stopped killing people!

I could go on about this subject for days but what I will say is that my dd got an adhesion in her small bowel from her second surgery when she was three months old. Since it was surgically related, we weren't on the cf team, but the surgery team. Bad idea! They had several residents and fellows. One forgot one day to add Potassium to her TPN so the mistake repeated for several days and it damn near killed her. She pooped five times after surgery but her stomach would not go down and then she quit pooping. So they finally checked her labs and her K+ was really low. Which we didn't know at first that K+ controls muscles like the heart! and bowels. So the lack of it kept her from pooping and they ended up having to give her three or four boluses of K+. I am just so glad we figured it out before her heart stopped. The Lord is always watching over our angels.
