Hi everyone! My boyfriend has CF ad i was just curious how hard would it be for us to have kids. I know he is sterile but we do not know what type he is. Does any one know what types of being sterile are there? Thank you for taking the time to read my post

Hiya! I am a CF female but I have a brother with CF who is starting to think about having a family with his partner, so I have been reading a bit about it and will try to answer as best as I can. I might not get it completely correct though, hopefully one of the wives/girlfriends of CF guys on here may help out too!

A small percentage of CF men are not sterile but the majority are. The reason for this is that there is a blockage in the tubes that carry the sperm from the testicles (where it is made). This means that although CF men produce sperm, when they ejaculate it doesn't come out. With me so far?!

There is a technique now available called ICSI which has enabled CF men to father children. It involves the father's sperm being removed from the testicles (with a needle and syringe), injected into the mother's egg under a microscope, and then the fertilised egg is placed back in the mother's body.

Like other techniques like IVF, it can take a lot of attempts for this procedure to work and result in a pregnancy. However I have heard of a few CF men who are now very proud fathers so it is possible. The best place to start in getting information would be your boyfriend's CF consultant. Hope that helps a bit!

In general, 98-99% of CF men are sterile due to the absence of the Vas Deferens. They usually are able to have children, but almost always require assistance by means of IVF.

Check out Julie's website! She and her husband (with CF) have 1-year-old triplets thanks to the assistance of IVF. K, it is possible!!! You just may need some help!!! (((HUGS)))

Julie will answer any questions that you have. It may take her a little time since she works full-time and has her trips, but she will help you!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> I can answer some questions, but I am the one with CF not my husband. Good luck!!!

Hi K,

My name is Julie and my husband Mark has CF. Last year we did IVF and transfered 2 embroy's. one of them split and all 3 "stuck" and we now have 1 year old triplets. I have a website with lots of information about male infertility, you can see it at www.cysticfibrosismaleinfertility.com

If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me at division902@verizon.net (I've got to change the email address on the website), the Yahoo one DOES work, I just can't access it at work.
