Abx Resistance-PA

Ok, so we just got word this morning our son's last culture showed resistant PA.

It is highly resistant to 2 different classes of abx: Quinolones (Cipro/Levaquin/etc) and Aminoglycosides (Amikacin & Tobramycin <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0">)

It is still responsive to the Timentin he is on, and they are sending the culture out for synergy studies to see if they can find anything to kill it.

My question is:

Does anyone have experience dealing with PA that is this resitive, and do you know of any ORAL abx that we will be able to use or are we going to be stuck with IV's in the future?

Thank you!

I did have 2 strains of PA at one time in which one was resistant to many meds. Fortunately Cipro was one that it was STILL resistant to......

I hope they can find some answers for you. FYI I have found that sometimes a cocktail of meds including the ones that show resistance can be of benefit. Something about the mixture that is helpful!

Sorry to hear this tho.....

Unfortunately Cipro is the only oral abx that treats PA and since he is resistant there are no longer any oral options. He could inhale Tobi but that he is showing resistance to Tobra means it likely won't be that effective. Most doc's agree though that sensitivity in the petre dish is not the same as in the lungs especially in the Tobra/Tobi world since Tobra is through blood and Tobi goes directly into the lungs. Additioanlly, there is inhaling colistan.

Most importantly though your son is someone that would benefit very greatly from Azli and you are in the position now that a letter to the FDA would be very appreciated. You may not have seen the CFF's request for letters to the FDA about Azli. They asked for letter from people that had experienced or had a loved one experience the benefits but I say a heartfelt letter from a dad about how he wishes for options for his young son would be beneficial too.

Happy Holidays.

Tom,

I just wanted to say I'm sorry, that must be hard news to get. Like Mel said, Zoe has responded before with a combination of meds. The Timentin is usually one of the ones they put her on also.
I hope things start improving for you guys.

Sending you all hugs and prayers....
