Acidophilus

I've noticed alot of people with CF use acidophilus including me giving it to my 3 year old daughter. Is this crazy or would insurance cover it? It's over the counter but maintains the natural flora in the intestine(so important because of the the antibiotics people with Cf are on). It's not that expensive but all the med my daughter are on add up. What about reimbursement through flex accounts? What do ya'll think? Actually i bet insurance would not cover it, they don't cover OTC stuff.

You'd have a fun time trying to fight insurance on that one. I always paid for it out of pocket (it wasn't too expensive, so oh well). But my mom writes all that stuff off on taxes, so you could, at the very least, do that.

I guess what I was thinking was to get reimbursed through our flex plan, which is not taxed like you said. I guess I would need a letter from our CF doc. He already wrote on for the Boost plus she drinks. Next time I see the doc I'll ask.

A flexible spending account is kind of like a savings account for medical purposes. A person has a certain amount of $ taken out of his/her paycheck (before taxes are taken out) and put into this account. Then you can turn in receipts for any thing you have paid for out of your pocket regarding medical expenses and get reimbursed. Some employers have it...some dont.

Hi Beth,

It helps to restore the healthy bacteria in the intestinal track -- especially after use of oral antibiotics. This is the case for anyone on antibiotics for any reason, not just people with CF.

I don't have any experience with using it all the time, perhaps others do.
