Adjustable bed

Has anyone tried to get their insurance company (private or Medicare/Medicaid) to pay for an adjustable bed? I think it would really help with nighttime coughing. Just curious.

I havent, but its a great question. I use a 12" medical wedge pillow and that seems adequate for now to help with the coughing. That's in addition to having the whole bed on a slight slant for my GERD (the head of the bed is under wooden blocks).

I slept with my bed on blocks for years and also purchased the slant pillow. My reflux got so bad that my doctor wanted me to sleep with the head of my bed at a 30 degree angle. I have CIGNA insurance and was able to get a large chunk of the bed paid for. I did not purchase a medical bed. I got a sleep number bed that raises. Love it.

We weren't able to get insurance to pay, but we did put word out to our family. So often people are asking what can they do, how can they help, etc. I asked my parents to send out an email stating that my son's health would GREATLY be helped if we could afford to buy a tempurpedic adjustable bed. She asked for small donations and was able to come up with enough put together to pay for the bed plus fancy sheet set to go with it. It's AMAZING as my son is comfortable, we can raise or lower the head of the bed for those rough nights of coughing/drainage/etc. It has been wonderful. Our accountant said we could possibly write off the purchase as a medical expense with a letter from our doctor, but we've not decided on that yet. I'm afraid it would cause us to be audited.

For years, we put the head of my son's bed on wooden blocks to keep it slightly elevated, but the ability to raise and lower the bed has helped so very much more.
