What do I need to research? Where do I start? He has limited medical records, as he has not really been cared for really well medically. He is an infant.

I have one week to prepare for his arrival.

I am in the process of adopting a little boy with cf. He was 18 months old when he came to us last sept. He just turned 2 on March 10. He wasn't cared for properly, but we got all of his medical records and were lucky enough to decide where we wanted to bring him for his medical care. We chose the cf clinic at the Mass General in Bostson, Ma. I don't know where you are from and what is available to you. He must have medical records and social workers that know something of what is going on. How old is he? I would be happy to talk to you and tell you what I know. I kind of had it dumped on my lap and did a lot of research myself. He is amazing and we are so blessed to have him. Good luck and keep in touch. My e-mail is Luvs2Sail5@aol.com.

Welcome Daisy!! How wonderful you are adopting a son! Congratulations!!!

I would start with www.cff.org. Find yourself an accredited CF center in your vicinity and get an appointment set up for him. They should be able to coordinate his care very well. And prepare that the first appointment will be incredibly LONG!!!

Knowledge! CF is a complicated disease with many different symptoms and paths. I recommend researching and empowering yourself with the knowledge about this disease. I also recommend preparing for your first clinic appointment with your son. Keep a notebook handy to jot down any questions that you have about his care and etc. I also recommend keeping a daily diary of his medications, symptoms, bowel movements, eating habits and so on.

Starting at the CFF website is a great idea, as well as reading and posting here.

Congratulations on your new son and welcome to our community!

I feel the others have given you great advice and also welcome to this site. I have found it to be great. I also adopted a few years ago - after fostering the child for 2 years and it is a great experience. My child is totally healthy and was at birth.

The social worker will know more than you imagine. Even with closed adoptions there is info available to you - just dig. Also ask about other family members.
Our sons bio grandmother has been a wealth of information and just chooses to be a distant grandmother. She also gave us baby photos and other great info - her parents health - her ex husbands health - etc.

Just keep asking and good luck - you are a special person and your baby will bring you many years of joy. I know - my children range from 35yrs old to 12.

Best Wishes and Congrats.

There is some great advice here. We found out Ella had Cf at 9am at her pediatricians office then went straight to our cf center. We didn't get home until 830pm. Very very long day. Lots of information. Bring a pen and paper to your CF center. Come with questions you know you need answers to and might forget to ask. The Dr.s at the CF center are your best resource. So ask them everything that is on your mind. I did and i felt so much better. Knowledge is power. Keep perfect records form this point on. Ask for copies of the tests.
