Hello, I have a 4 yr old w/CF and I really want another child but my husband and I have decided we are not going to have anymore of our own. I really want to adopt. I would like to adopt a child no older than 2 yrs old but it is almost impossible to find a healthy baby without it costing 20,000 can someone lead me in the right direction on what to do? Thanks Heather<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif" border="0">

some churches have adoption services. That might be a good place to start.

Also, just a question to satisify my own curiosity-have you and your husband heard of or looked into a pre genetic implantation option (there is a specific name for it, but I can't recall exactly right now). It is a procedure that is used in combination with IVF and ICSI where they fertilize the egg in a petri dish and take out the embryos that have CF and use the non-cf ones to re-implant into you. It does cost, depending on where you live and what doctor you go to, but from what I hear and have read is about $10-15k, still expensive, but maybe less that the adoption-even if you find something for under the 20k, it's still going to cost you.

Just and idea,

Julie

Have you looked into adopting out of the foster care system? They have little ones there waiting to be adopted and I'm not sure, but I bet the gov't pays for a portion (or all) of the costs involved in adoption & then after that, of course, you would be on your own financially.
Food for thought....

Heather, I can't recall if I have heard from anyone on this site who has dealth with genetic pre-implantation, but if you search other websites out there, specifically ones titled infertility or IVF you will find information and chat rooms. They have chat rooms like this CF one, and I am sure there are many people on those sites who have personally had the procedure done. There is also an infertility clinic out of georgia (I will try to find the link again and let you know what it is) where you can post questions or email the doctors and they really do write back to you. I am dealing with a baby issue of a different nature, and they got me in touch with a family who had already been through and had a baby, with the procedure that my husband and i are going to do. I am sure that they would do the same for you-get you in touch with a few couples probably who have had the genetic pre implantation procedure done.

I hope this helps a little bit and I will try to find that website, or the doctors email for you.

Heather, the website to that clinic I wrote about above is www.ivf.com They offer a lot of information on that site, and have some premium services too but you have to register. Even though I live in CA and will not be going to georgia anytime soon to pursue IVF I still registered because it gave me access to more information that they had online. Also, the doctor's email address is mperloe@ivf.com. I would start on that website for the genetic pre-implantation question you posted above, and also write the doc to see if they have anyone who would be willing to talk to you about their experience, pros/cons, cost...

Best of luck and please keep us posted on what you find that works for you!

Heather,
My husband and I are the parents to a 3 year old with CF. It took us forever to decide if we wanted to risk having another child with CF. We considered adoption for a long time. Well, after a lot of thought, we decided to try one more time, hoping to beat the odds. We had genetic testing done when i was 10 weeks pregnant, because we wanted to prepare ourselves in case the baby had CF. My son was dx. when he was only a week old, and i grieved for about the first 3 months of his life. This is why we wanted to find out prior to the child being born, so i could do my grieving before the baby arrived. Well, we had the genetic testing done and found out the baby did not have CF, but she was a carrier of the CF gene. We were ecstatic to say the least! Unfortunately, we ended up losing our daughter, Rylie Marie, when i was 4 months pregnant due to an infection that i got from the genetic testing they did. Well, since then, we knew it was God's plan for us to become adoptive parents. We have recently began the adoption process and will be adopting a child within the US. We too, weren't sure if we could "afford" adoption, but you do get a $10,000 tax credit when you adopt, which makes the cost of adoption less expensive. We will be adopting a child in the US, and it will be an infant. I would love to know where you are from. We live in Wisconsin and are dealing with a TERRIFIC adoption agency. Best of luck to you and your husband.

Oh, and i forgot to mention in my previous post that we also looked into pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). This too, is VERY expensive and is not covered by a lot of insurances, which doesn't make much sense to me considering how much money the ins. companies would save. The thing with the PGD is that you aren't guaranteed for the process to work the first time. Each time they do the IVF it costs like $7500. The PGD itself is only about $2500. That is why we elected not to do that. Also, you have to invest A LOT of time into it, such as very frequent trips to the local IVF center, etc. Again, good luck on your decision. I know how hard it is.
