Advantages to tuneups

1. I can plan around my husband's work schedule!

2. I can make and freeze meals in advance for my family. Today I made 4 meals in the time I usually make spaghetti (maybe a little longer since my 4-year-old was helping!). I made enough spaghetti noodles for two meals--spaghetti and linguini with broccoli and crab, AND hamburger helper for two meals. Tonight I'm going to cook a roast in the crockpot while I sleep and tomorrow during the day I'm going to cook chicken noodle soup in the crockpot. Crockpots are great time savers!

This is possible because I am feeling well, instead of waiting until I feel like I'm dying before getting IV antibiotics. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Second topic: I was talking to my dad tonight about having to plan for an overnighter to get my PICC line placed. Then, we were discussing when I was sicker possibly getting a port. My dad stated that it seemed like to him that I needn't wait til I was sicker, why not get one just for convenience. So, do people get ports for convenience (so they don't have to go in overnight to get PICC lines)? I usually go in once a year for antibiotics, although since I got pregnant last June, I've been in 3 times and now a 4th time for my tuneup. Hopefully, I go back to my norm of once a year. If that is the case, would anybody recommend getting a port?

If you are only going in once a year then yay a port would be a waste of time. BUT anymore than 2 times and you should think about getting one.

I got one b/c I go in anywhere from 2-6 times per year. I love it - but I got it b/c I had no other choice and couldn't get piccs anymore.

I have personally have had around 6 PICC lines in the past 4 years and havent had any issues yet with my veins. Personally I don't think I will get one until about 2 years in a row of multiple IVs. My last PICC line was placed in 15min and I was ready to go. Is there a reason they keep you overnight after a PICC placement. Most of mine were followed by a week in the hospital then I went home on them. One of the times they placed it and I drove home right after.

I agree with Jessica- I didn't really have a choice, they couldn't get PICCs in anymore so it was time to get a port. It is so much nicer, however it has to be flushed everyone month, so if you only need it once a year it is not worth it because you end up going in to get it flushed more then actually using it.
Good Luck going in and hopefully this tune-up before you get sick will help alot!
