my son has been admitted to hospital for 2 respiratory viruses and bronciolitis. i have previously posted about him and his GI and coughing issues. he has RSV and parainfluenza virus 3. he has been having very violent coughing fits that turn into gagging and not breathing but not all the time. my belief is that CF presents with bacterial infections not viral. he has had these infections for 7 weeks now and just seems to be getting worse. he has not needed oxygen in hospital yet but has these violent coughing spells. also his mucous is way too thick to be suctioned so they have him on nebuliser every 4 hrs and have gotten a lung specialist up to see me tomorrow to show me lung traetments like wacking his back to loosen mucus. could these severe viral infections that wont go away be due to CF? should i ask for him to be tested still? very worried and confused mummy here...

CF patients are not immune to viral infections just because we are always on the lookout for the bacterial ones. In many ways bacterial is better because you can give antibiotics to kick its but. I have had times where I went in for bacterial, went on meds, started getting better & then caught a virus which just through me back into the same symptomatic issues that I originally had.

Viral or bacterial I would still push for testing. Have they dont sputum cultures to determine that its not bacterial?

I hope things all fall into place soon for you!

yes they did a mucus suction and sent it away for testing. it came back RSV and parainfluenza virus. he also has bronciolitis... is bronc and a virus like RSV the same thing? when i see the lung specialist tomorrow should i ask him/her about a CF test?

I would at least bring it up to the lung specialist. What I dont know and maybe some other members can help with this is......IF they will test for PA, MRSA etc that are common CF bacterias if there is no CF dx yet. I only ask this to make sure that all bases are covered. That might be something the lung specialist would know. Is it common to test for pseudomonas if there is no CF dx or any other high risk issues for PA.

He might vary well just have a rough start in life and it not be CF. I just would hate for treatment that could help him not be given if it is.

HUGS & let us know ok?
