So I was recently searching the web cuz I feel like I am more than just shy really it feels like I am actually afraid of people. I feel like people are watching me and judging me everywhere I go even though I know they aren't and I tell myself this I still feel like they are. Anyway I came across a thing called social anxiety disorder and I really think I have it. What I want to know is if anyone else has it or maybe thinks they have it. If you do have it did you get help or anything cuz I feel like I need to do something but I'm just not sure what to do. I have been seeing a counselor but I feel like it is just making it worse.

I've always been really shy and anxious around people, uncomfortable talking to/being around people I don't know. To the point where I would start skipping classes and making excuses not to go out. Recently this turned into full fledge anxiety/panic attacks and it was horrible. I finally talked to my doc and she prescribed an anti-anxiety med called Buspar. Its amazing what a difference it has made, I could even tell after just taking it one day!! I suggest asking your doc if there is something they could recommend you try. I was really hesitant at first to ask but it was well worth it! Hope this helps some and feel better soon!

Hi Anna--

My daughter has suffered from an anxiety disorder for years--she is now 13. She has been in counseling for a few years. What has really helped is the medication. She was on zoloft for a year and a half and that did not work for her. She too started taking buspar in combination with prozac and is doing much better. Just like my 15 year old son needs his Zenpep to function, she needs her meds. I would definitely talk to your doctor about it. The talk therapy really did not help my daughter until she was on the right meds because she was anxious at times about going to therapy.

Best of luck to you,

Chris

Hello Anna,

I think you are on the right track with getting help for your anxiety. I'm a social worker, as well as a fellow anxiety ridden person, so I understand how difficult it can be to function when you are feeling like this. I agree with the others and suggest an anti-anxiety medication, however, I wouldn't completely rule out talk therapy. A combination of medication and therapy can sometimes lead to some really incredible insight into yourself and to where your anxiety may be coming from. I would suggest medication first though. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> good luck and if you would like to talk further feel free to PM!
