Airway clearance after port placement?

How did you guys maintain your airway clearance immediately after having a port placed? I am having one done on the 24th and I realize I will be sore- maybe too sore for my vest? What did you do? Does coughing hurt after placement?

Using your vest is not injurious to the port so you can go ahead and use it as your pain permits. I had more pain not at the site of the port but at the site where they threaded at my clavical. It wasn't painful until I would cough and that would cause back pressure from my heart to the site. I made sure to lube up my lungs well with lots of HTS and I tried to huff cough as much as possible. I wouldn't recommend missing any treatments if possible bc then you may need the clearance even more than you would have needed it if you grinned and beared it and did it anyway.

The day of the port placement I did a really good sesssion before going to the hospital. Then once there but before op I did acapella. That night I flapped open my vest shoulder strap on the right side but after that I did vest as usual. You'll be tired and groggy from the versed and fentenyl also. If you have someone to do good manual pt the first 24 hrs a few times it wouldn't be a bad idea.
