albuterol question

Kory's pft went quite well. All his numbers were within normal except one that was a combination of the others ended up being slightly low. His Dr. didn't seem at all concerned. Strangely though, after they gave him the albuterol, his numbers were actually slightly lower than before. The assumption seemed to be that perhaps he was starting to wake up, and he did stir once when they administered the albuterol, but then he slept soundly enough that they could do the hugging 4 times without any issue and he took quite a while yet after that to wake up. The information I found on albuterol online said "This medicine may cause paradoxical bronchospasm, which means your breathing or wheezing will get worse" Hmm. Then I made the mistake of asking the Dr. about hypertonic saline. He said there was a study saying saline wasn't actually helpful in children under 6, but then said we should start using albuterol twice a day before his cpt. He also said that even if/when we did do the saline, albuterol is given first anyway. I picked up the prescription but haven't had the courage to actually give it to him yet. We live far enough from a hospital that if something went wrong, we'd be in trouble. Would you ask for a second opinion? Could / should I ask if we could do it the first time while we're there for his appointment next month just in case?

If you are concerned,I would definetly talk with the Dr. regarding your questions and concerns. Maybe if ped doc is closer you could go to their office to administer it for the first time. I would most certainly put a call on to the CF doctor first thing Mondy morning. Good luck

You shouldn't have any serious issues with the albuterol, but you may see some nervousness/shaking associated with it, which could mean that the dose is too high. I have had friends (non-CF) who have needed to take albuterol on a short-term basis or who have needed to administrate to their children. The only complaint that I'll heard it that it makes them a bit jittery (maybe similar to a caffeine high).

Ds has been on albuterol since he was a few days old. No issues. Used to open up the airways.
