Albuterol Side Effects

Hi. I know i've asked this question before, but now that DD is out of hospital and over the productive cough, we are back to a dry, hoarsy cough, which comes on during exercise RIGHT AFTER an albuterol treatment (via nebulizer).

Are any of your kiddos experiencing this? Can this possible side effect of albuterol damage her in any way? Her doc doesn't believe the albuterol could be causing it, but I cannot put this one to rest. Any experience would be greatly welcomed.

First, a few questions...
How does she sound when she exercises without doing a neb treatment first?
How does she sound after doing a neb treatment without following it w/ vigorous activity?

Very good questions<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

She will cough a little after vigorous exercise. She had even before we started treatments. But it would just be one or two small coughs. This morning we didn't exercise her after the treatment and there was a slight dry cough while she was eating her cheerios (I think she partly choked) but that was it. Last night after the treatment (and this is more normal) we all ran together and she sounded like a seal barking until I got her some water to wet her throat and then it calmed down. So, while she tends to have a slight cough every now and then when exercising (probably a slight case of exercise-induced asthma...but wouldn't the albuterol correct this??) it seems the albuterol really aggravates her throat. Now, if this is the case, I will just deal with it, but want to know what would work to ease her throat so there isn't permanent irritation/damage??

The barking seal kind of cough is what we hear with Emily when she gets sick or otherwise experiences an increase in inflammation (asthma/inflammation is a big issue for her.) We have found with her that an inhaled steroid is necessary.

Sore/dry throat and some cough CAN be a side effect of albuterol but the way you describe the cough as being increased with exercise and existing before starting treatments sounds like there's more to it than that. It may be that a different bronchodilator would be better tolerated than albuterol, though, so worth asking about. As far as whether albuterol alone would treat asthma- it depends. Sometimes it's enough, sometimes a steroid is also needed. It depends on how bad it is and how it manifests in any given person- it's something to talk to her dr about.

I can't know for sure, but it's listed as one of the 'common' side effects on drugs.com, not one of the severe/dangerous ones indicating the need to seek immediate attention. It says regarding coughing, sore or dry throat: "Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome when using Albuterol." Given the dr doesn't seem overly concerned and the cough isn't severe or constant, I probably would make sure she has plenty to drink, etc (maybe have her sip water throughout her neb session as well) and see if that helps... If it gets really bad though I'd call back.

I cough way more after my Albuterol treatment and I've been using it for yrs. I still get the shakes as well though both usually pass within the hr. I have used Xyopen (spelt wrong)as well and this worked as well and hardly no shakes, but it was a bit more expensive, so I went back to the Albuterol. It may just be a small side effect you will have to deal with, I know you want her to be comfortable, and I agree with keeping her throat lubricated, I finally started doing this, why I never thought of it before? Sometimes the simplest things slip by me.
