Allergic Reaction and Using Antihistimine--Advice

My 3-year old daughter w/ CF has broken out into a severe rash with several hives. It is itching her pretty bad, and topical cream has not cured the situation. My wife and I noticed it when she returned from the backyard...it may be due to a bug bite or allergy to the fresh cut grass. I was told to never give her an antihistimine because this has a a negative impact on the mucus in her lungs by drying it up and possibly increasing her chances of another infection. Is the true w/ just a single time small dose? Can we use an antihistimine to stop the outbreak? Thoughts? Thx!!

my son had a severe allergic reaction a little over a year ago. We still are unable to pinpoint what it was, but the doctors think it was white chocolate. He had hives from head to toe for over three days and was very lethargic and not breathing well. We took him to the ER and they immediatly gave him a shot of Benadryl. I too was concerned about giving him an antihistamine, but in his case the benefits outweighed the risks. We carry an epi-pen (an emergency injection of epinephrin to prevent anaphylactic shock) just in case. His CF doctor said to avoid antihistamines if possible, but sometimes your child will need it. If you do need to use benadryl, use it sparingly and make sure your child drinks extra fluids and salt. I usually do an extra breathing treatment as well. Good Luck

When my son broke out in hives due to the sulfer in his antibiotic, we were told by our CF team to give him Benedryl to treat the reaction. That took care of the hives and he hasn't needed the Benedryl since. Has your daughter been tested for outdoor allergies? If it were to happen again, definitely have her tested!

Yes give the bendoryl!! I have severe allergies to the IV and oral meds I take so if I ever come down with hives they give me benodryl immediately. It usually doesn't affect my lungs because I'm not using it day in and day out. But when I get a cold, I do tend to stear away from antihistamines cause I like to be able to cough and blow that junk out!!

Good luck, hives are so annoying!

I've been given Benadryl for allergin reactions when in the hospital. It does dry you out, but if you are using it as a one time deal rather than a remedy for every sniffle I think you're in the clear.

FYI: If you have seasonal allergies that make you crazy Claritin doesn't dry you out nearly as bad as any other over the counter allergy medicine so you can use that. Still drink lots of water and salt and I wouldn't take all the time, just when your allergies are the worst.

My daughter just turning 7 months has cf diagnosed at 6 weeks through N.Y. blood screening. Was diagnosed with asthma and allergies. She takes Zyrtec every day. Is this bad or ok? Shw seems to not have had any weezing for almost a month sinse her allergy med was changed from clariton to zyrtec. She was in and out of weezing fits since Jan. and now seems to be doing great. Any advise or comments?

the only problems that I ever heard that anti-leukotrienes( such as Zyrtec) can cause is liver function impairment, especially in those that already have liver issues. You may just want to have a doc monitor the hepatic functiion, which they should be doing anyway. I do know many people that only use the allergy meds during allergy season(spring, summer). That may lessen the risks of impairment

We gave my 2yr old ben when he had an allergic reaction to things. But other then that we don't give over the counter meds. For his allergies the cf doctor said the would prefer we gave clariton
