Allergy Shots

Hey Everyone<br><br><br>

My doc has suggested that I get back on allergy shots and get my allergy work up test thing done again. He said it should make my lung function go up and I should feel better in general. Also, he said all my "crackling" noises when I breathe will get better or even go away. <br><br>

I wanted to hear everyone else's experience with allergy shots. Did they approve your breathing and lung function? I haven't been on the shots since I was like 18 so I don't remember if they made any kind of difference.
<br><br><br>

Thanks!

I used to do allergy shots as a kid too, but I had no lung involvment then.

I'm not on shots now, so I can't tell you if they help, but my guess would be YES, if you are continuously suffering from allergy symptoms and especially if you have lung involvment.

I have a lot of allergies now - we have pets that I'm allergic to and I'm not getting rid of them. I've noticed I'm more SOB (and more junk) since I moved in with hubby/ more animals.
The allergies cause histamines - they can drip into our lungs. This causes inflammation (and infection). Chronic inflammation causes damage. So, the goal is to control that cycle.
The reason I'm not on shots now, is that my allergist thinks it would be overload and dangerous on my system - seeing that they give you a shot of what you are allergic to, and I'd be going home INTO allergy triggers.

If you start on them, IM me and tell me how you think they are working ;-)

Best Wishes

hey jennifer,

i started allergy shots a few months ago and i am hoping that it will have a positive effect on my lungs. it is too soon to notice results yet, i'm not even up to my maintenance vial. but i wanted to say especially if you have allergies to a LOT of things that i think the allergy shots are a good idea.

good luck.

Allergies cause lung inflammation.

A great deal of what ails CFer's is inflammation in the lungs.

My lung function improved dramatically once I got my allergies under control. This didn't just include allergy shots - but also included treating my carpet with anti-dust mite powder; puting a HEPA air filter in the room where I do meds as well as my bedroom; putting dust mite covers on my pillows and mattress; taking Allegra to block histamines, Singulair to block leukotrienes, and Nasacort AQ to reduce sinus issues/infection/headaches.

Dr. Warwick says, and I agree 100%, that CFers often don't have their allergies diagnosed because docs assume the wheezing/inflammation/shortness of breath is just CF. Oftentimes, it's not.
