Hi everyone.

My daughter cultured PA, after a year without it <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">.....
We have been prescribed Cipro and Colistin. She has had Cipro in the past with no problems.
This time around, however, it appears she is having an allergic reaction to the Cipro....We talked to the physician on call tonight, as our regular pulmo m.d. is out of the country. FOr now, he has suggested we stop the Cipro for 2 days and try again.

Have any of you had an experience with an allergy to Cipro? How does this work regarding treatment of the PA?

I'm so scared and feel pretty powerless right now.

I used to take Cipro on and off for several years before developing an allergy. I got a mild rash on my stomach that lasted for a couple of days. Now when I need an oral abx I take Levaquin, which is in the same class of antibiotics as Cipro (they are both flouroquinolones), and I haven't had any problems with it.

I'm sure her doc will look at her culture sensitivities to see what other orals may work for her.

Good luck!

I am allergic to Cipro and few other abx. I can still take the drug but need to be desensitized. Desensitization is usually done by an allergist in a hospital, although I have found a doc willing to do it for me in his office. They start out giving a very small dose of the med and gradually increase it over time (about every 20-30 minutes) until you have received a full prescribed dose. Introducing the drug to your body like this reduces the chance of allergic reaction. PFT's, heart rate, bp etc. are monitored throughout the process (usually takes about 8-9 hours.) A IV is also started in case they need to use it. Once the desensitization is complete you just continue taking the Cipro at home as usual. I have had this done many many times and it has always been successful. Hope this helps...there are definitely options to get the right treatment for PA even with drug allergies. Let me know if you have any other questions!

What kind of reaction is she having? I would be very careful about stopping Cipro and starting again. Allergic reactions are not something to be taken lightly. If it were me I would definitely make sure to have benadryl in the house or even get a Rx from the on call doc for an epi-pen if he really wants her to try taking it again.

What kind of allergic reactions to Cipro has she been having?

I don't have experience with allergies to Cipro, but I am allergic to Levaquin. My CF dr has it on my chart as me being allergic, but my symptoms were probably just really bad side effects? Severe depression, unable to sleep, racing heart rate, trouble breathing (flet like someone was holding a pillow over my face at night)...and when I went off it, I was fine. Very scary at the time though!!

Hope she is able to get something that works well for her soon <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
