Am I overreacting?

My husband says I am overreacting, but I am wondering if I should have more testing for CF done on my 3-month-old? He has had 3 colds so far and seems to cough for no reason occassionally (although Chris used to do that to mimic me). The biggest thing lately that makes me wonder is that he is extremely gassy and yesterday my mom said that's one of the reasons they took me in to be diagnosed. Argg! Anyway, could there be another explanation for his gassiness? By the way, I posted something about this in the pregnancy category, too. He is gassy even when I am not and I'm breastfeeding. Also, Alex is underweight, although he was born 3 weeks early. He seems to be gaining, but more slowly than I would like. He is 12 pounds right now and was 6 lbs 7 oz at birth.

Should I get more testing done? What would be the next step after the infant newborn screening? Will my insurance pay for it if the first testing was negative? Are these symptoms enough for another test? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First thought is to agree with your hubby (sorry) that you are probably seeing something that is not there out of fear.

That said, I would probably have him tested for my own peace of mind. Otherwise you will spend the rest of his life worrying everytime he gets a cold; which is not good for either of you!

I would expect that with you having CF, you should be able to justify just having the genetic screening done. You know he is a carrier; the only way to confirm that there is not a 2nd mutation is to either have him or your husband fully tested. This would then give you the answer, and you can move on with the likely answer that he is just a baby with a couple of colds.

Just my .02 worth.

Hey Jeana,
I can't help you out on the further CF testing, but wanted to pass on some information on his weight.

I actually plotted out where your son falls on the growth chart. You said he was 3 weeks early, so I assume he was born at 37 weeks, with a presumed due date of March 14th (I estimated).

According to the growth chart, he is between 25-50%. That's actually pretty good. I'd say that if he is following his own curve on the chart, then he must be doing fairly well. We get concerned if kids start dropping off their curve or their curve plateaus. A lot of people feel that their child should be 75-100% on the growth curve, which is not the case. How is he doing on the height curve? It's nice to have a similar curve there...

How are his stools? Are they loose (worse than the normal breastfeeding poop)? Do they smell foul? Is he eating more frequently, acting like he is starving all the time?

I know you are concerned. The general rule of thumb is that babies double their birthweight by 6 months of age and triple their birthweight by 12 months of age. From your numbers, it appears he is almost doubled his birthweight and he isn't 6 months yet.

Hope you find answers. Good luck!

Thanks, Jenn and Tom. My husband said that I worried about Chris, too, even though he was adopted. I stopped worrying about Chris, because he was so healthy and is a tall, husky boy.

I'm probably just a worry wart. Alex's pediatrician isn't worried and neither is my CF doc. His stools are looser at times, but in general seem to be normal. I can't tell about the stinky part since I can't smell. But my husband hasn't complained.

Thanks for easing my concern guys.
