Amniocentisis and CF

My son's doctor suggested a sweat test due to 2 occurences of rectal prolapse (age 4). However before his birth we did an amniocentisis test which came back normal. Does this indicate anything as to the possibility of CF?

Depends on whether or not they were specifically looking for CF when they did the amniocientesis. I had amnio done when I was pregnant with my daughter because I kept going into premature labor. Well my amnio came back normal - however, my daughter has CF. When I asked my doctor about this he informed me they do not look for CF unless you know about a family history of CF & that is your reason for the test.

I had an amnio done because my blood work that they did showed that i was a carrier for cf. i have a 5 year old and didnt even know i was a carrier with her. Later on in my pregnancy ashton showed some sort of bowel blockage so i decided to do an amniocentesis and they were specifically looking for the mutation i carried and my husband carried which came back positive. So yes it is possible for someone to have it and have a normal amnio..

Hi there,

I had an amnio when I was pregnant with my daughter. They have to specifically be looking for CF when doing the amnio because they take amniotic fluid and somehow grow out some fetal cells and test those cells for the CF mutations they are looking for. This takes about 2 weeks to get an answer. from the test. An amnio otherwise usually looks for chromosonal disorders, such as Down's, trisomy, etc.
