An Old Saying

I was just watching the news that had an exert about Britney Spears losing her kids.
Dr Phil was saying that he would love to help her through her probs and has offered it to her.

He said that there is an old saying,
"You can lead a horse to water but you cant make them drink it", he says that that saying is not true.
He says
"you can force it to drink it by just holding onto it and making it stay there until it drinks it".
That really got me thinking. I think the saying is kind of pessimistic in a way. I have always liked that saying but it does show that we are more willing to give up on something or someone if we believe that way.
Just thought I would share that.

I agree with it, though. If someone is against helping themselves, you can't really force them to. They have to be ready to do it themselves for it to happen.

yeah, the guy's response sounds to me like a futille attempt at cleverness. he basically said that the horse will drink whenever it wants to if you make it stand in front of water.

really just sounds like a convoluted version of the original phrase. you lead it to water, but you can't force the horse to drink....but you can wait for the horse to decide to drink to. that's the whole point of the saying - the horse will drink when it's ready.

I think I may have miss quoted him. When he said it I took as he meant that you can stay there and hold on until it drinks.
I took it as he meant just because you cant force it to drink doesn't mean you have to leave it. you can stick around and help it.
Now I am not sure exaclty what he said. But thats what I got from it.
I am a lttle confused today and I may have gotten this all wrong.
Sorry
