Samantha (age 13) had her annual labs, scans, etc. last tuesday. So far the things we have gotten back were all good or normal except there was protein and bacteria in her urine. Anyone know what this means?? The docs. haven't gone over the results with me yet, I just called and a girl in the office read what they had gotten back from the lab because I am an impatient person and was getting tired of waiting. Thanks for the input.

I did a search and came up with this result.

Protein: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://kidneydiseases.about.com/od/proteininurin1/a/Overview0010.htm">http://kidneydiseases.about.co...in1/a/Overview0010.htm</a>

Bacteria: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/aha/aha_asybac_crs.htm">http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/aha/aha_asybac_crs.htm</a>

With the two symptoms together, it sounds like kidney infection. Hopefully it is minor and easily treatable.

Chances are likely that this isn't a big deal. I know waiting for lab results is frustrating, but in all likelihood, it's a minor infection and nothing more. Unless she's having back pain (low down, just above her hips) and is spiking a fever, I wouldn't worry. Encourage her to drink clear liquids and some cranberry juice. STAY AWAY from orange juice for awhile. It contains a lot of protein and is hard for the kidneys to handle if they're already dealing with an infection.

It'll clear up soon. (Speaking of clear, if her urine isn't clear or pale yellow, she needs more water)
