another cold?

Hi,

I have a question about normal frequency of colds/virus thoughout the winter. My son, 8 years old, had a rough year last year when he was diagnosed. He had 4 bacterial infections back to back. He had either a bacterial or viral (put on antibiotic because of exerbation) in August and October of this past year. On Feb 7th he started with a cough. On 2/12 his PFT's were down and still had cough so was put on an antibiotic and Symbicort. Saw again 2/25 because he was not any better (got better a day here or there but then sick again). 2/28 had a fever and cough so chest x-ray (clear). Next day seen by GI and she noted swollen glands and had a lot of broncospasm. 3/18 still coughing (did not have a baseline cough until early Feb now mostly bronchspasm unless he has another virus) and his 25/75 numbers were down so he was put on 5 days oral steroid. Steroids kicked in on the 5th day (day we saw CF doctor) and his FEV1 and FVC were great (FVC 110 and FEV1 109) but because his FEV 50 and 75 were still a little low (80 and 70) on both the oral and inhaled steroids we added hypotonic saline (to try for 3 months or switch to pulmozyme). He only cultered staph since last summer when cultured which he has cultured consistently (even after several antibiotics for other things) for the past 7-8 months. As of yesterday (10 days latter) he has another viral infection (seems viral with increased nasal mucus) with increased cough. This is like the 4th since Feb 7th (2 months). His GI suggested talking to the ped about checking his IGG levels because he seems to be getting too many infections. Does this seem like a lot or just what happens to kids over the winter? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. So sorry you are going through so much! My daughter (6) is constantly getting viruses. I think she will go a few days between each cold before the next one kicks in. That just seems to be he natural of going to school, all the kids are always sick, but it does take my daughter longer to get over everything. Amazingly she always seems to Biunce back with pfts, but this last winter because if all the infections she did manage to pick up pseudo wilhich still hasn't affected her baseline but we are still fighting it off.

Last summer my daughter caught a LONG virus and/or bacterial infection that lasted 6 weeks, took two rounds of antibiotics and brought fev1 down from 115 to 88 and fev25-75 from 90 something to 50! Dr. Let us try flovent and after a few weeks her numbers with up to 128 fev1 and 109 25-75. Dr. S

Sorry, wasn't finished.

Dr speculated she had reactive airways from all the infections and Flovent relieved the inflammation. Now we only use Flovent when she has a nasty bronchial cold, and her pfts are staying up. Maybe you should give Flovent a try. Do you also use a xopanex or albuterol to open te airways prior to pulmozyme or hts? When dd is sick we do his religiously during every treatment. Otherwise we use this 1x/day.

Thanks, it sounds like this is just what happens with kids. Justin was on Flovent but was changed to Symbicort. it is both a steroid and long acting bronco. He is on it all the time to help with small airways. We do xopanex then saline then vest. He also uses albuterol 1-2 times a day depending on the day. Before Feb, we didn't have to use albuterol nearly as much, only once in a while. He seems to have either reactive or some small airway issues that get better with the xopanex. Thanks and good luck with the pseudo. Did you know she was probably going to culture something or did she not have any symptoms? I worry about it for him. We will keep your daughter in our prayers to kick it's butt!!!!

Hi. She was diagnosed at 3. No symptoms, clear culture. Long story but we were lucky we found out I guess. I knew something was wrong for 2 months. She ha recurrent ear I devotions that wouldn't clear with antibiotics and then green goo coming out of her eyes. The cf dr didn't take me seriously because he said I called to much in the past because of her coughing ( we already established she was constantly sick slice starting school) I am not a doctor and a first time parent so I don't know what is normal. Anyway, I after he finally saw her after sending her to the pediatrician multiple times, I asked for a culture which he reluctantly did and what do you know....pseudo. We even had tubes put in! But, she is doing ok now. Cf is definitely a rough road, but she is happy. Hopefully your son is in sports. My daughter does judo, soccer and gymnastics and we have a trampoline inside our house. It keeps her healthier than if she didn't have all those things!

HI Justinsmama!! Everyone else please chime in but I thought that Pulmozyme and Hypersal was just routine for everyone? So I'm a little confused as to why they are just now offering that up...but glad he is getting on those...they will help!! And not sure where you live or what kind of winter you had but Abby stayed sick pretty much ALL winter with virus and sinus stuff! It was so very frustrating! LOL But here in TX we are finally leveling out a bit...I think we just had our last cold front hopefully..which of course messed up her sinus' once again. Our cold fronts this year have been awful on our whole family not just my CFer...and my son and I are both on allergy shots because of our horrid allergies! This winter was very different compared to any other winter that I can think of just because of all the junk it kept bringing in. Hopefully next year won't be so bad on our babies!! And I hope he gets to feeling better!

Please others chime in on the Pulmozyme and Hypersal...cause now I'm curious :)
