Another poop question

I have heard that floating poop is common with people with cf. I have heard that it is the oil that is not being digested that makes it float.

Do only people that are pancrease insuficent have problems with this?

Any info about this would be helpful. TMI is not a problem. I think at this point we should all be comfortable talking about these things. It seems to come up quiet often and is a part of everyday life that we have to deal with.

The reason I want to know is that my son's poop does float. Not all the time and it looks normal to me not oily. He is very skiny but he is a very picky eater. He also has a lot of belly pain everyday and more so when he eats despite the fact that he is on previcid and zantac everyday. He has not gained any weight in the past year he actualy lost 2lbs. but he is getting taller. He is 4 1/2. He also is on zyrtec daily and still gets cronic sinus infections. He has his adnoids out in march and has had 4 infections since then.

When we're at CF Clinic and they're asking me questions they always ask if her poop floats. It's been floating for a long time but to me they're somewhat fatty looking. I have noticed the last 2 days since we've changed how we give her the Prevacid and changed her eating none of her poops have been floating and they do not look fatty to me.

I bet you never thought you'd talk so much about poop, huh?

I am not familiar with your CF story so sorry if I am wrong in assuming the son you are asking about is the one with CF.

The fats can not be digested by our pancreases so that is what causes the oily smelly stools - in pancreatic insufficent (PI) patients. Fun stuff!!!

If he is getting alot of belly aches I would talk to the DR about enzymes. If he is on them already he may need to up the dosing or switch them.

My stools for the most part are 50/50. 50% sink 50% float. But when they float they are not oily or fatty looking. I am PI.

Also if he is having alot of sinus problems that could be a culprit in the belly issues. Swallowing alot of mucus can cause blockages and tummy aches. I would definitely talk to his DR and see what they can do to help him. There is no reason for him to be in pain everyday

He has acutaly not been diagnosed with CF yet. Right now we are focusing on his baby sister who has a lot of lung issues, but their pediatrician thinks that they both have it. Her pulm. apt. is not untill july 2nd so we wont know anything for a wile. She did have a sweat test that was negative but I am still going to push for genetic testing.

I just bought an air purifier for my room which my baby sleeps in also and it has made a huge difference in my sinuses draining. I have also seen a difference in the baby so I am think of buying one for his room also. I have only had it for two nights and my husband wont let me get another one untill he is convinced that it is helping. I'm not sure how hard that is going to be because he has no medical issues at all except high colesteral.
