Anti Pseudomonas Vaccine - why don't we do this?

Does anyone have information about this? I heard that the US is using an anti pseudomonas vaccine on burn patients and questioned why we don't use this on CF patients. I found out that Europe has been testing an anti pseudomonas (covering 8 strains) vaccine for 10 years on CF patients 18 months to 18 years with excellent results and wants to market it to the US (FDA first stop most likely) in 2005.

I have not yet heard of this vaccine as I only have a 7 month old w/CF, but at my next clinic I will ask about it. We go to the University of Michigan Mott Children's Hospital. Once I get an answer I'll post again.

I am going to ask too. Thanks for the info. I do have to say though GO FIGURE! the US is always the last to catch on for everything important of this nature. Just this week, our "new" president Bush has signed a new law that makes some body building supplements containing anabolic synthetics (used to mimic illegal anabolic steriods and yes, have the same effect) illegal. Some of the products being pulled off the shelf, are the same anabolic products that my husband has been using to gain weight and stay healthy with his CF for 12 years. And it's use hasn't had an adverse affect on him yet, despite all the doctors and nutritionist telling him he shoudn't use it. I just wish people would quit muddling around in things they have no clue about, before they mess things up for those who benefit from it. I am just furious and have half a mind to write my president and give him a piece. sorry, Just venting.

hey youre lucky you dont live in australia then! 5 to 10 years is the waiting period for new meds, procedures and treatments to arrive. we are still missing a few things for cf patients here. btw im pretty sure those types of products are illegal here too. there are other more effective and less dangerous drugs to maintain weight and stimulate appetite.

although trials are now going ahead in europe for this vaccine, it is not yet available in europe either, which is why you guys dont have it yet either....

sadly i think it will be ages before it is available as all funding (well most funding) is diverted towards gene therapy leaving little to fund other projects which could help in the mean time.

Hi - Actually, if you check the Burna Biotech website they have been testing it for 10 years in 46 locations on 470 18 month to 18 year olds. They have retained a 'bring it to market' company called Orphan Europe, located in France and specializes in implementing Orphan drugs throughout Europe. They plan on marketing in the USA in 2005. So, you may say they don't have it - but it sounds pretty close to market to me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this won't help people who already culture pseudomonas, right? *Sigh* Worthless for me then LOL- but sounds promising for people who haven't cultured it.

Look at the Burna Biotech web site and search for the presentation on the pseudomonas vaccine. I think I found it under news or contacts. Nevertheless, it is there and is in real english for a change - not doctor ease. It says that it acutally is helpful for people who have cultured positive for pseudomans, keeping it from further spreading and the vaccine covers several strains. Keep the faith.

Opps...nevermind...I found it. It's Berna and I was typing Burna...Here's what they say for any of you who want to read it:

Pseudomonas aeruginosa vaccine
This is the first and only vaccine for the active prophylaxis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in cystic fibrosis patients. It is a polyvalent conjugate vaccine, combining 8 prevalent serotypes from P. aeruginosa and exotoxin A. It is the first conjugate vaccine to be based on a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) component from the pathogen. Cystic fibrosis is a genetically induced abnormality of the mucus-producing glands in the lungs, affecting some 40,000 people across Europe. The disease is frequently complicated by Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections, which are very difficult to treat and severely impair the quality of life and life-expectancy of the patients. Aerugen specifically targets the progressive destruction of lungs caused by Pseudomonas infections. Immunization with this vaccine has been shown to preserve lung function in cystic fibrosis patients by preventing infection and progressive colonization by P. aeruginosa. The clinical results build on ten years experience with the use of the vaccine in patients with cystic fibrosis. The final clinical phase has started successfully, and involves some 470 patients in 46 centers located in four European countries. The P. aeruginosa vaccine was also the first vaccine to be approved as an "Orphan Drug" in Europe. "Orphan Drugs" are pharmaceuticals or biologicals specially developed to combat rare diseases. The European directive on Orphan Drugs, which has been in force since April 2000, offers special incentives for companies developing drugs against rare diseases, including market exclusivity for up to ten years. For the registration and marketing of the vaccine in Europe, Berna Biotech has formed an alliance with Orphan Europe, a pharmaceutical company which specializes in the development and marketing of "Orphan Drugs" in Europe.
