Antibiotic Resistent Lung Infection

Any information you could give me on Antibiotic Resistent Lung Infection. My niece is 13 years old and has had CF since birth. She went in for a Bronchectomy & so called Bronch-Wash. The procedure didn't go well. They were unable to do the bronch-wash, said her lungs began to bleed. Her PFT's are very poor now. She was fine before the bronchectomy. Anyway, Doctors are now telling us she has Pseudomonas, Aspergillus and achromobacter (antibiotic resistent) lung infections. And they don't know what else to do or try.
Our next step is to go to another hospital for a second opinion.

Sincerely,
Marla

I would defintely go to another hospital. Usually an infection is resistant to specific medications, not "ALL" of them. Did they do a culture sensitivity to see which antibiotics her infections will react to? It usually takes a week or two for the cultures to grow and for them to test which meds they react to. Although if you are seeing a CF doctor, they SHOULD have already done this.

Why did they do the bronchoscopy if she was fine before it? Did they know what she was growing before it or did they determine it from the scope? Did she grow any of these before? Sorry, just trying to understand better what happened. As the other poster suggested, hopefully the testing of drug sensitivities will come back and they can determine what meds would be an option. A second opinion is a def. by the sounds of it. Something sounds a bit goofy. We will keep her in our prayers. Jo Ann

This is going to sound stupid, but her Dr's are doctors that specialize in CF, right? Not just general practice doctors? If she isn't being seen by CF specialist (at a CF Clinic), I would find the closest one for the second opinion & even if she is being seen by a CF physician, another CF Dr at another center may shed some light on how to treat her. This sounds like a very unfortunate situation. You're family will be in my thoughts & prayers <img src="i/expressions/rose.gif" border="0">

I agree something doesnt sound right ? First of all having all of the bacteria you mentioned is common with cfers, i am not sure about her lungs bleeding. Her pfts are down you said and I think that can happen. I have always been told that when you do a bronchoscopy that there is a chance being down in the lungs could stir things up. Sounds like that might have happened with your niece. I also am confused about them saying there is nothing else they can do. They could admit her and start her on IV meds, for the pseudomonas. They can also do a blood test called Hge level for her aspergillus. If it is normal then I wouldnt worry about it if it is not her body could be allergic to this fungus and she would have to go on meds. As far as the resistant one I am not sure what that is but they should be able to send the culture away and see if there is a combination they can come up with to treat her.

I would definitely find another doc or hospital that comment and advice is completely unacceptable. I hope this helps and I will be praying for your family. Let me know what you find out.

Update on my Niece.. Most of you were right.. The doctors she was seeing were not her CF "Main" Doctor - (he was out of the country) he is back and the story has changed.

She is home now and on IV's still - but doing much better.

Thank you all for your support.
