Antibiotics Delaying Menstrual Cycle

Hi everyone!

Just wondering if there are any other cf women out there that have experienced or are experiencing late menstrual cycles due to antibiotics? I've done some research and I'm pretty sure this is why my cycle is 8 days late. I was in the hospital for 2 days and had gallstones removed from my bile duct. I was given falgyl and cipro after I was discharged and my CF dr also prescribed an additional script of cipro along with bactrim just to be safe. I was due to start my period on 2/24 and as of today (3/4), It still hasn't come...

I'm not a woman but I had a buddy whose wife was on antibiotics and it made her cycle 9 months late. Apparently antibiotics can interact with birth control pills.

Hi Amber. I have exactly the opposite problem now that I'm on birth control. There are certain antibiotics that I know will basically kickstart my cycle. Before I started birth control, I did experience what you're talking about. I'm not sure if it can be narrowed down to only the antibiotics, as being sick can also delay the start of a cycle. It might just be that the combo of antibiotics and being sick has your body saying "probably not a good idea to 'prep' for baby right now" and your cycle will be a little off until you're healthy and off the meds. It's never a bad idea to get in touch with your team if you're worried though. :)

I've had different antibiotics delay or start my period early. Cant speak to how it effects birthcontrol. My doc was adamant that I never take additional female hormones, she said they'd make my lungs worse.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'm not in birth control as I'm on Zithromax 3 days a week and I've heard that being on antibiotics can make birth control ineffective. Also, hubby and I are actively trying to conceive. I do think that me being sick along with the antibiotics is causing my cycle to run late.
