Antibiotics Only working short-term

Just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences with what we are experiencing with our 2 year old son. For the past year he has acquired many respiratory infections, leading to the doctors prescribing 14 day courses of antibiotics. (Except for when he cultured PA in Jan. where he went on Tobi for 28 days). The antibiotics do seem to work from around day 2 of being on them, until about 10-14 days after the course is complete. Then he is back to coughing and being miserable again
He spent a couple of weeks on IV antibiotics last month and once again he is coughing terribly so much so that he ends up throwing up!
Any similar stories or advice??

Thanks

Have them check for another culture after a week to see if other bacteria are flourishing in the absence of PA. It happens to me on IVs all the time. For me it's a battle between PA and staph b/c they work in opposition to each other if you only treat one.

He had a bronchoscopy done in the hospital and cultured staph and strep pneumoniae. After the results came in they took him off the tobi and put him on something else that they were susceptible to. He has only really cultured staph in the past, aside from the PA culture in January.

We went through this with Jordan when he was little too. We'd start abx, he'd be better withing 48 hours, but be back to running a fever/coughing again before the course was even finished. VERY frustrating. Of course at the time, we didn't even know he had CF. He wasn't dx until he was 15. Just the same, it was because he wasn't being treated with the right abx, or for long enough.

One of Jordan's biggest problems was that his sinuses were draining into his lungs, and his ears were getting infected. We went through several sets of ear tubes, had adnoids out twice - they grew back. It was constant yuckiness until he got older, and learned how to cough up the mucus, and blow his nose better. Things like that make a big difference, because they can actually get the stuff out of their bodies rather than just recycling it.

It may be time for IV's again. Have they checked his sinuses? Does he have allergies? Keeping allergies under control can make a huge difference.

We had issues with DS when he was a baby with ear and sinus infections. Would be on something for 14 days and then would get another infection shortly after going after abx. The peds doctor would only prescribe amoxicillan instead of augmentin, which worked for DS. As for his sinus infection, his doctor decided to prescribe an abx for 30 days instead of 14 days and that seemed to do the trick.

I agree with the above posts; it sounds like the 14 day courses of abx are not enough; and one course of Tobi may not have been sufficient to take care of the PA either. If the abx are not taken for long enough, they only kill off the weaker bugs and leave the more resistant ones behind to grow and become more virulent, leading to nastier infections.

I'm so sorry your little one is going through such a nasty cycle of infections... I hope with the help of the drs you can get this under better control. I'd ask about trying a longer course the next time he needs an abx and be sure that when he's been cultured they are giving him abx that his bugs are sensitive to.

Hi
sorry your little one is sick. I am 23 w/ cf and have resistance issues to the point where I was doing month on month off iv's. I am wondering if your son takes hypertonic saline - I know some clinics won't use it little ones but it really might be worth a shot. In an attempt to stay out of hospital I have been nebbing it at high doses - 40 mins 3x daily. Guess what no hospital for 6 months!!! While it isn't strong enough to kill bugs it gets the junk out and provides a less optimal environment for them to grow. It is something I wish I had started long ago! I will point out the first few doses were TOUGH- lots of coughing, wheezing and a scratchy throat but it gets better. I am not sure if this helps at all but it may be worth a shot.

Good luck.
