Any dealt with MRSA?

My 8 year old has recently cultured MRSA for the first time. Good news is that psedomonas has been absent for 3 years but now we have this new friend. He's not symptomatic and his PFT's are in the mid 80's. He looks and sounds great. Has anyone ever dealt with this "superbug" that we're seeing so much of in the news? We've opted NOT to treat it w/bactrium or cipro given he's not symptomatic and we do not want to make him reisistant to any antibiotic he may eventually need in the future....any thoughts.

Obviously, I'm a mom who hasn't slept much (been up since 3:30 a.m.) since we've gotten this lovely dx.

I recently cultured it for the first time. Did he culture it through throat culture or sputum culture? Throat cultures are so inaccurate. Being that he's 8 I'm guessing it's a sputum culture. Personally, if it was me and it was found through sputum culture I would treat it even if he's currently not symptomatic from it. Have you seen the report and what drugs it is susceptible to? That's great news if it is treatable with Bactrim. Mine is also. I don't believe Cipro is ever used in the treatment of staph. Cipro treats PA. I was super keen on not getting MRSA but now that I have cultured it I've realized there are a lot of people - adults and children - with it and are doing just fine. The best piece of advice for you/him is lung clearance. Get out that infected mucus and he may still be able to get rid of it.

I cultured it back when I was diagnosed. My doctor's hit it hard. I believe we did Bactrim (been on many doses of that stuff until we discovered I was allergic to the antibiotic.

I agree w/ other. Treat it. He may not be having symptoms, but be proactive, and try and get rid of it, before it causes symptoms.
