So haven't been here for a while. But wondering if you all may have some thoughts. I wonder if my doctor got his degree from a cracker jack box. I had to get a ct due to xrays looking so bad. Since both of my sons have cf they thought I needed to get tested. Only a 38 sweat test. But my ct showed my lungs to be scarred but mostly filled with mucus. So my pulm said I have debilitating asthma and that he had never seen anything like it before. Does asthma cause your lungs to fill with mucus to the point of lung function being in the 40's? But, my boys have been doing really good! Anytime I log on or try to post on here it says I can't and something about my dad being stupid.

there may be several diseases that cause mucus, other than CF. However, asthma is not normally associated with increased mucous production. Have you had any other testing done(PFT's, labs, etc...)?

There are many things that can cause mucuous. From viruses to chronic illnesses. From serious to minor. Often times its difficult to diagnose some things because there is such a small difference in symptoms. My CF doctors get many patients who were being treated for Asmtha because they didnt show signs of pancreatic involvement, but their respiratory issues went beyond the normal asmtha range. Maybe try another doctor!

Luke,
Yes I do pft's my fvc 45 fev1 38 give or take a few % mostly take. My doctors are always taking blood from me. Something is always off my liver, kidney function or cbc. They seem to take turns being off. I recently found out I have high cholesterol at 23.

Jazzysmom,
I am starting a doctor vacation due to no health coverage. I will only be going if I have to because I will be paying. But I do think I should see another doctor. He does not let me look at my xrays ultrasounds or anything. I have always been able to before and it kind of bothers me.

Administrator,
I have not been able to post while logged in since late July. Shamrock is right 2sickkids is my forum name. I guess I can try to log in and see.

My boys are doing pretty well growth wise. I took the baby for his 1 yr check up and his doctor could only say what is he eating. He had gained 10 pounds since she saw him last. The wic office told me my oldest son was 3 pounds over weight for his height. They looked at me funny cause I laughed. I was amused have never been told he was fat before. My youngest has been having a reacurrent low grade fever that keeps coming and going.

I assume (hope) that you are getting insurance soon?
I think they HAVE to give you copies of your medical records that you request according to the HIPPA? laws. My doctor always gives me what I ask for. Sometimes there may be a fee, but so far I haven't had to pay one.
I would insist on getting copies.

2sickkids,

I'm glad your sons are doing well. I know you all had a tough time for awhile. Did you ever get to take a blood test for CF after the sweat test?

With PFT's in that range is likely that you have something other than asthma or at least in conjunction with asthma. First, you should get your DNA testing done to confirm you do not have CF. Other than that probably the most likely disease would be emphysema. People your age diagnosed with emphysema many times have a genetic disorder called alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency. It does have liver involvement, which will cause your blood work to be off. I guess it is possible for asthma to progress to severe COPD at your age but would be uncommon. I would most certainly f/u with a reputable pulmonolgist in your area. I have 2 very good friends that are pulmonolgist but are in WV. I guarantee they could properly diagnose you but WV is a bit of a drive for you.

<P>Conditions that can cause bronchiectasis (besides CF): severe pneumonia, whooping cough, Tuberculosis, immunodeficiencies (such as AIDS or HIV), allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, Kartagener's Syndrome, illnesses that affect the cilia.Bronchiectasis is lung injury that causes the airways not to move mucus effectively or process oxygen well. Go to <A href="http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/brn">www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/brn</A> to read more about bronchiectasis. Bronchiectasis can be seen clearly on x-rays. If you are really concerned about possibly having CF and your sweat test did not show it, you can have the gene screen done (blood test). There is such a thing as an atypical presentation, meaning a person feels the effects of CF, and has it, but does not show up on sweat test - though this is rare. </P>
