Anyone awake?

I'm hoping that someone out there can help me tonight. DS has gotten the cold that has been going around our family the last couple of weeks. It's really nasty, lots of mucus. I was wondering when I should start worrying. . . I'll probably call the doc anyway but wanted to start here first.
When I use the stethescope on him I can hear a wheeze. The only reason I did that is that his breathing sounded a little abnormal, almost like he was gasping. . . when I write this it seems that I should be taking him to the hospital, but it's not an ongoing thing( the gasping sounds).
It's been really hard for him to sleep, no matter how many times I suction his nose it still seems to just be a flowing water spout. I made sure to use his albuterol right before bed and he also is getting more vest treatments, but nothing seems to be doing anything.
I'm sure this is just a cold, but I want to make sure that if it is turning into CF stuff that I know what it is. . . does that make sense?
Help?

Hi,

If he is gasping at all and or wheezing, I would call the oncall right away. Especially if he is under 2 years old. What is a cold to the rest of us, meaning older kids and adults, can be RSV to little ones and is very dangerous even for a normal healty little one. If he is having breathing issues at all it is not worth the risk of waiting, the ER might be where you need to be right now. Can you call the oncall pumonary doc? We have a pulmonary team member oncall 24/7 here. They would certianly be best to ask.

Once again, I say if your instincts are telling you to be at the hospital, you probably should listen to that.

I'll be praying for you and your little one,

Thank you. I guess I just needed someone to tell me that it's ok to call the on call doctor. I did and he says it sounds like RSV. . . that he wants me to call in tomorrow to let him know how he's doing. He says that there's nothing much to do about it, to just watch and make sure he's wetting his diapers and eating.
I'm off to bed, hopefully we will have a somewhat restful rest of the night.
