Anyone familiar with Elderberry

Just wondering is anybody knows much about Elderberry (I think it is actually Black Elderberry). I bought a bottle of pills (not liquid) because my sister had heard that it was good to help keep you from getting sick. I haven't taken any yet because I don't know much about it. I asked my doctor about it also, but he was unfamiliar with it. Are there any other CFers out there that take it? If so, do you have any adverse reactions to taking it? Thanks for any input.

Yes. I take it in a liquid syrup form for coughs and colds.

It is in carotenoid family-filled with antioxidants that fight free radicals-the "waste" cells that need to be eliminated from our bodies, like thick mucus and stuff. It also has Vit A, B vits and C in it, so it makes it particularly good for colds., and the immune system.

In my research the only thing I've found as far as caution is you should buy a high quality one. B/c the stems of the elderberry plant contain cyanide-a toxin-and they shouldn't be included in the supplement. Its not enought to hurt you. But over time it could in high doses-so good quality herb companies wouldn't use the stem of the plant in their supplement. It also should never be used in pregnancy.

I have had more than one person suggest I drink Elderberry wine but I haven't carried through with it.
The only thing I might do if I were you is check w/ your pharmacist to see if there are any drug reactions to elderberry (which I can't imagine there would be).
Let us know how it seems to work for you!

The liquid is more effective, the pills take a minimum of 5 days to kick in. To date, there have been no known side effects, but it's not something you want to take 24/7/356 becuase it gives you a hyper-immune system. It is recommended to take when you start feeling a cold coming on. But pills might not work as effectively to make you feel better because the pills take a while to get into your system. If you insist on the pills, I recommend you take a week on the pills, then two weeks off, a week on, two weeks off. And when you feel a cold coming on, take it for the duration of the cold (whether it's 2 weeks or 4 weeks that it lasts). If you can get the liquid (and they've got some stuff out there that is pretty good tasting-sweet, but good) it's better because it works righ taway.

I took this many years ago. I loved it. I would take it for two weeks on and then stop for a period of time. I think all herbs in excess can actually suppress your immune system. I know that Echinacea and Goldenseal do that.

Thanks all for your replies. I might check into getting the liquid form. I guess I should have checked it out more before I bought the bottle of pills. We have a couple of "nature" stores here, so I'll see if it is something they carry. I may check with the pharmacist just to make sure it doesn't interfere with anything else I'm taking. Thanks for all the info!!!
