i'm traveling out of the country on saturday and i'm wondering if anyone could give me a heads up on what to expect? i will of course be taking all of my meds in my carry on. do i have to put all that crap in a 8 by 7 inch ziplock bag? and will i have to remove it during the security check? seems a little embarrassing. also, has anyone had a hard time? i am getting a note from my doctor listing all of my current meds; i hope this helps any quesitons they might have.

edited: do you think there will be a problem putting all my pills into small zip lock bags? this is what i was going to do to save space.

I just flew to Florida last week and carried all my Meds onto the Plane with me in a Daily Planner. Security did not question anything at either airport. They did not have me take anything out of the bag. I have CF and am post-transplant so I have quite a haul of medications to carry. I had mine in a gallon size bag but that was for my convenience; just in case my med planner came open. I do not think anything is different for travel outside of the Country. I have traveled for work the last few months and I have been through the airports mupltiple times with my meds without problems.

Good Luck and Enjoy

Hey Laura,

I flew out of the country last year about this time and the only hassle for me was a little extra time then usual for them to look through my cary-on bag. They have to wipe the machines to check for bomb dust I think. Having that doctor's note is good to have and it gives you piece of mind since it's all stuff you need to bring. Basically, they can't (I don't believe) deny you medical treatment that you need. Plus my doctor's note outlined that I can not live without this medication...that helps too.

One stop we made gave me some hassle b/c of the weight of my medication bag that I wanted to bring onboard. We spent about 45 minutes dealing with it, and then they let us go. The lady took my doctor's note around to the other people she needed to get approval from and all went fine after that. Just took time.

So....plan for baggage delays on your behalf (get there early), bring your note and your vest's instructional manual if possible too. It all helps the process!

Have a BLAST and share the pictures when you get back!!!

I was on 4 planes in the last 2 weeks, and I have to say that things have really calmed down and gotten easier to handle at the airports. The quart-size clear sealing bag is only for liquid or aerosols like shampoos, toothpaste, hand lotion, etc. Medical liquids that are in their original containers (like TOBI or saline, insulin) are exempt. Also, the carryon limit does not apply to a bag containing medical equipment (but still, try to be reasonable about what to check and what to carry on.)

As for it being embarrassing, don't worry about it. Everyone is so busy trying to take care of their own stuff that it won't be an issue. Even the TSA agents won't look at you weird. I actually got a little sympathy on the last trip...the guy looked at all my stuff and said "Wow, I'm sorry."

This last trip I had all my meds and my nebulizer/compressor in a bag about the size of backpack. I tell the TSA agent as I'm putting it on the conveyor belt that it's a bag of medical stuff, and they've been pretty good about that.

The thing they seem to be adamant about right now is that you put your laptop and camera or video camera in its own bucket as you slide it through the x-ray. I'm not sure why that is, but they were none too pleased that I set my sweatshirt on top of my lap tap. (I've only got two hands, and was just trying to expedite the whole process...)

Since you'll be bringing a note, I don't think you'll have any problems. One thing I didn't do this time that I wish I had, was wear slip on shoes or even slippers to the airport. By far the thing that slowed me down the most was taking off my shoes and putting them back on while trying to repack my laptop.

One last piece of advice (sorry this is so lengthy). If they DO give you a hard time and force you to throw away any liquid medication (like TOBI or Pulmozyme) WRITE DOWN THEIR NAME, what they threw away, and have them sign it. That way you'll have much better luck getting insurance to refill the script.

Happy travels!

I fly all the time. Once a month for the past 6 months. Bring my Vest, compressor, etc carry on.

It's no big deal - just be prepared. These people know nothing about CF, so be prepared to just calmlying a politely explain what your stuff is.

Just be smart about it and you'll be just fine.

If you check out the website of the airline you will be flying they may have extra information about what to do for all of your meds. I know that I flew Delta at the beginnig of March and they had little informational video things for you to watch.

As for meds - I had individual labels for everything just to make sure there was no question. I also went ahead and put all of my pills and meds in separate bags that way if I had to remove them I could just pull out the bag and not have to disrupt EVERYTHING in my carryon. I did the same with my other stuff like lip gloss, nose spray, hand sanitizer and so on.

As for the machines they were swiped and checked. Pills were really of No concern to them. I will say you have to declare liquids at security and then they told me to just open my bag so that the liquids were showing.

I also had an O2 machine with me so that was swiped and checked for bomb making materials as well.

Also to add I have an insulin pump and that is unable to pass through Xray equipment - I had the one I use that is attached to me and also a back up in case mine had a problem. I carried the backup in my hand and they simply swiped both of them and ran the wand over them and all was fine.

Just make sure you have letters for everything in case there is any question. I had a ton of letters for insulin pump, meds, O2 and so on and they didn't ask for any of it. Had I not gotten all of that though I know they would have needed it. I did have to show the O2 stuff at the counter during check in but security didn't need it.

Then again safety and security procedures may be different for flying internationally - I flew to hawaii, so it is still within the US technically even thought everyone referred to it as international lol.

Just be prepared -- everything labeled and visible. We really haven't had issues lately, except DH had some stuff -- toothpaste --- in his shaving kit that wasn't in a plastic baggy and they gave him a tough time, so he tossed it. Then was told, "Well you didn't NEED to do that". I actually get hassled more at our small local airport than I have in Denver, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Cabo, Cancun... Last time we went to Mexico they pulled us aside at the local airport to scan our "breathing device" (nebulizer), then after a lengthy wait made DH plug it in and turn it on before we could go. And don't get me started about the "pat downs" -- felt like I needed a shower after all the groping

My cousin's wife did get hassled last month when she flew here from Denver because she used gallon ziploc bags for her toiletries, so before she left our house for her flight home she switched everything to quart and sandwich size.
